Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Wholesome Stout, which was voted Supreme Champion at the CAMRA Winter Beer Festival 2002 is produced using only the finest ingredients available. They include Pale malt with roasted barley which produces a rich dark colour. Flaked barley is used to create a full and creamy head. The Stout is flavoured with Northdown hops which give a dry resinous taste.

(500 ml bottle from Belfast Co-op) Pours dark cola brown with a very large tan head that eventually diminishes to a rocky, foamy cap. Aroma has kind of a musty, sweet and sour quality - can pull out some chocolate and coffee also. Lacing is just foamy globs. Mouthfeel fairly smooth, not great, a little prickly. Flavor is basically bitter coffee, with a more chocolatey finish. But it’s not a flavor of really good chocolate or coffee, kind of like leftover coffee or chocolate. Flavor has a bit of that musty, sweet/sour quality I got in aroma. Not thrilled with this.

bottle. I’m biased against English stouts after my experience with so many mediocre ones. It also irritates me how it seems on every label they tout the fact that they have won some kind of award at one time or another. They must hand out awards to beer left and right over there. Anyway, the pour is very nice: dark black body with some reds coming through and the head is aggressive. It forms into a mountainous, tan terrain. Nice. The smell is pretty good too. There’s musty caramel, dense chocolate, and perhaps almonds as well. The actual flavor is where this beer goes downhill. It packs some very biting, acidic coffee with thin chocolate that can’t quite make balance. Overall, it’s not robust enough. Typical English stout or porter going on. meh.

500 ml bottle. Pours a thinish black with mahogany edges and a two finger fluffy craggy beige head. Some sediment in bottle. Nice dryish roasted malt aroma with some chocolate and yeast. Flavor is of burnt malt up front with a dry chalky finish, slightly astringent, with moderate hoppiness. Some notes of coffee as well. Mouthfeel is pretty thin with a little too much fizzy carbonation. Overall, this was a little too thin and fizzy for my tastes. The mouthfeel was the majot downfall for this one.

Pitch black body with an aggressive large head that fills half the glass and does not fade anytime soon. Nutmeg cocoa and a touch of cinnamon are in the nose with cocoa dominating. I notice the bitterness first. Close to a salty bitter but the exact spice it is close to I can’t nail down, something used in Christmas cookies or cakes. Light roasted cocoa in the finish. It could be the over carbonation effecting this. The roast flavor comes out more the more the further I drink this down. Ap-3 ar-7 tas-6 pal-3 ov-13

pours black with lasting light brown/tan head. aroma is weak, what i actualy could smell was good, but i just did’t smell much. taste is very lacking, some weak roasted malt/charcoal upfront. then a watery overly bitter finnish. not a very impressive stout. best thing about it is the appearance, after than its all down hill.
