Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Wholesome Stout, which was voted Supreme Champion at the CAMRA Winter Beer Festival 2002 is produced using only the finest ingredients available. They include Pale malt with roasted barley which produces a rich dark colour. Flaked barley is used to create a full and creamy head. The Stout is flavoured with Northdown hops which give a dry resinous taste.

Half pint pulled at the Great British Beer Festival, a dark brown with thin head. Aroma is strong of the roasted coffee malt, which is replicated in the flavouring. Smooth in the mouth with a bitter finish.

Quite the Guinness clone. Some ashy notes of roasted bittersweet chocolate. Virtually no sweetness, a drying finish, somewhat astringent. Nice palate from the bottle conditioning, a refreshing departure from the trend of nitro-widget bottling. A recommended choice when one wants a nice, non-nitro’d authentic dry stout. Reddish, almost purplish tinged brown to opaque black. Foaming stiff head.

Bottle. Poured dark brown with huge foamy tan head. This head had peaks and valleys like a home whipped cream! Nose was roasted malts, chocolate and yeast, (bottle conditioned). The taste was sour, then sweet and with lots of roasted flavors. Then sour after taste. Had a little too much carbination for my tastes.

Pours dark brown with minimal tan head. Complex aroma of roasty malt, some rauch, chocoff, cabernet. Tastes malty, with chocoff, cabernet, some hops. Medium palate, with decent complexity but lacking balance somewhat.

Black with a thin tan head. Aromas of dark coffee and fruit. Bitter chocolate flavors along with some roasted nuts. Thin palate was off-putting. Seemed to suffer from watery British beer syndrome.
