Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Wholesome Stout, which was voted Supreme Champion at the CAMRA Winter Beer Festival 2002 is produced using only the finest ingredients available. They include Pale malt with roasted barley which produces a rich dark colour. Flaked barley is used to create a full and creamy head. The Stout is flavoured with Northdown hops which give a dry resinous taste.

Bottle. Black with small head. A bit of malt and coffee followed by a quite roasted-bitter and dry finish.

Bottle. Dark reddish colour. Very roasted flavour. Did not seem very complex, but OK.

Poured a deep pitch black with a thin off white head that dissipated within moments of pouring. Fragrant with molasses, roasted malts and a hint of tawny port. Bitter on the finish with a solid sweetness upfront. Wouldn’t buy it again in a bottle, but would try from the tap.

Garnet black, lovely colour. Sweetish nutty roasty nose with an intense roast barley flavour married with sweet maltiness, a full body and rich fruitiness. Pipe tobacco, tar, toast - loads of mingling flavours here. Bitter, roasted, fruity and very long finish - excellent beer, this shows the difference between cask and bottled versions of the same beer - just read the rates of the bottled version!!! Deep brown body, medium tan head leaving nice lacing. Bitter, charred roasted malt aroma. Thin-bodied and very dry, dominated by the same roasted/charred malts noted in the aroma with peeks of dark chocolate and an almost bitingly bitter finish. Not worth the dough (or the barley, for that matter).

Aroma of mocha and caramel, completely dark brown, save for a sliver of burgundy, pours a small tight toffee head, and leaves some lace. Roasted coffee/chicory flavour, rich malt too. Light bodied, smooth and extremely bitter. Terrific!

Appearance: deep, dark, chocolately brown body (unlike Dorothy’s own snowy skin), with a lush, creamy tan morass of foam atop. Aroma, smooth, with light hints of coffee and chocolate, but very light, though still bearing the typical characteristic marks of a fine stout, and just a touch bitter, as I like it (though not as much as I do). Rich and roasty at the fore, with a welcome hop presence right off. The coffee flavors become prominent, the full malt profile is in good show. Full-bodied, too, but mellow, and none-too challenging in taste. All in all, it’s doing it’s job as an average-type stout, I’d say. Medium finish, vanishes a bit too soon, leaves the tongue too quickly. A nice stout, with late fruit emerging, and tasting well, while it lasts. Pretty average, nothing I’d turn to again...unless she’d show a little more LEG...A-hem

Not a bad looking girl on the label but the beer isn’t that great. Sort of a metalic and sour smell before the real stout smells kick in. A bit bitter finish after the tyoical chocolate and unimpressive coffee tastes. Worth finishing but I wouldn’t buy it again.
