Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Wholesome Stout, which was voted Supreme Champion at the CAMRA Winter Beer Festival 2002 is produced using only the finest ingredients available. They include Pale malt with roasted barley which produces a rich dark colour. Flaked barley is used to create a full and creamy head. The Stout is flavoured with Northdown hops which give a dry resinous taste.

Bottle: Very dark red, permanent beige head. Quite unfortunate metallic aromas smells a little like manure. Pig manure on the tongue disappears quickly to some blinding chocolate flavours. The chocolate is oined by deep roasted malts in the finish which stretches out for a while. A bit of a tingle on the tongue. Not a bad one at all really. Some unfortunate characters but it holds up quite well.

Very mediocre dry stout. Brown pour, large fizzy head. Roasted malt, smoke, light chocolate. Not very flavorful.

Bottle from Beermerchants. Dark brown with red tones and a solid tan head. Smoked and meaty aromas. Salty, smoked meat flavours, some roast and caramel sweetness. Rauchbier-like. Drinkable.

Weak aroma of light coffee. Pours dark brown with dark ruby highlights, and a huge foamy tan head. Lots of carbonation, perhaps because of the bottle conditioning? Some roasted barley and light coffee flavors, a little dry and bitter on the end. Mouthfeel is odd - huge carbonation like soda. No bad flavors, just weak. Stout soda.

I do love a stout but I was a little let down by this one. A little average in my opinion on the usual stout flavours. Very dark ruby tinted brown, almost black. Beige foamy head. Little malts and light roastiness, chocolate and coffee. A bit wooly and smooth, maybe a good thing for some but just didn’t excite me. A good stout in my eyes is more of a taste sensation.
