Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Wholesome Stout, which was voted Supreme Champion at the CAMRA Winter Beer Festival 2002 is produced using only the finest ingredients available. They include Pale malt with roasted barley which produces a rich dark colour. Flaked barley is used to create a full and creamy head. The Stout is flavoured with Northdown hops which give a dry resinous taste.

50 cL bottle. Pours black and with a huge light tan head. Roasted malt, slight chocolate aroma. Dry malty, a bit of roasted acidity, breadish and solid bitter chocolate yet with a bit of smoothness. Dry and roasted finish with a light ashtray-ish note - vague smoked too.

(Cask at St. Urho’s Pub Porter Days ’09) Very dark brown and clear. Medium sized quickly disappearing white head. Dry and medium bodied palate with little carbonation. Burntness, bitterness, bit of liquorice and metallic flavours in taste. Bitter and roasty aftertaste.

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of coffeem sweet malt, earthy. Tastes soapy with some coffee hints. Weird aftertaste.

Poured from 1pint 9 oz bottle into large mug, black in color with dark red when held up to a light source. HUGE foamy tan head. Surprisingly little lacing as the head fades. Aroma mostly of bittersweet chocolate with a hint of roasted coffee. Tastes quite good. Heavy semi-sweet chocolate overtones with some coffee notes. Strangely carbonated; almost like a soft drink. Has a very quick finish.Overall, very tasty, but there are better stouts for the money.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a crazy huge head that filled 2/3 of the pint glass. It took me about three pours to finally get all the beer out of the bottle. Aroma is of chocolate, a bit of roastiness and coffee. Flavor is the same, more sweet than I’d like, not nearly enough roastiness or bitterness to balance it out. Certainly drinkable, but not what I am looking for in a stout at all.

Bottled. Poured clear, medium reddish-brown with an explosive cap of beige head that filled up the glass. The aroma picked up sweeter caramel and chocolate notes with a mild, dry detergent presence.. decent. The flavor had dry-roasted chocoate with light coffee bitterness surrounding.. toasted barley and more chocolate at the end. Light-medium bodied, dry, and grainy on the palate with a short finish.. creamy carbonation made it kinda hard to drink.
