Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Wholesome Stout, which was voted Supreme Champion at the CAMRA Winter Beer Festival 2002 is produced using only the finest ingredients available. They include Pale malt with roasted barley which produces a rich dark colour. Flaked barley is used to create a full and creamy head. The Stout is flavoured with Northdown hops which give a dry resinous taste.

Bottle. Smoky aroma, coffee and roasted hops. Black in colour with a great crispy off white head. Smoky flavour, some coffee in it. Decent roasted malt stout. Very nice stout.

500 ml bottle. Dark fruit aromas. Black color with a huge light tan head. Lots of body, and the carbonation explodes in the mouth. Bottle conditioned all right. The flavor is mild burnt toast with raisin or prune as a low key note. Finishes dry, with a touch of bitter. Kind of piney bitter. Coffee notes seem to be present, off and on. Like it!

25 oz. Bottle, pours clear and vey dark, it looks black but is a dark ruby when held up to a light, has a creamy tan head that recedes to a thin cover, left a nice lacing of fine bubbles on the sides of the glass, aroma of roasted and dark roasted malt, faint cherry(?) and berry fragrances, some smoke aroma and a touch of chocolate, there are roasted and dark roasted malt flavors with licorice and chocolate in the background, with a quite faint molasses sweet flavor in there, not overly bitter for a dry stout, some of the roasted malt flavor carries on for a bit after the finish, I found the mouth feel to be medium, I thought the cherry and berry fragrances along with the roasted malt gave a interesting nose for a dry stout, and the molasses sweetness as faint as it was, added to my enjoyment of this ale, very nice.

This is not bad, has that typical old world kind of nose, that musty aroma found in English beers. Great appearance though, huge frothy head, set over its dark brown coloring, has a nice contrast. Very malty and bone dry on the palate, slightly roasted chocolate and coffee notes. Decent.

500 mL bottle. A nearly opaque dark brown. If held to a bright light a cloudy rust-red color is apparent. Thick, tan, extremely persistent head. You can "sculpt" shapes in the head by playing with how you slowly pour the beer through it. Potent aroma of malt spices and coffee. Earthy coffee, caramel and chocolate flavor. Smoky slightly bitter finish.

purchased at 99 bottles in federal way, washington. pours a dark brown with a tint tint, very large foamy khaki head, crazy foam lacing. smell is faint, cocoa, some coffee, some roasted malts. taste is milk chocolate, some malt, some coffee. overall the texture was almost like a chocolate flavored italian soda, poured bottle really slow and still 3/4 of the glass was foam.

Strange for a stout to have this much sediment, but there you have it. Black, coffee-coloured with a rocky head. Smell of dirty dead leaves, some roasted coffee, maybe honeycomb (wax). Smoky, a little sourish, but still a clean overall flavour. Feels more like porter than stout.
