Draft at the brewpub, GABF week 2009. Alcoholic nose, full of whiskey, oak amd little else, to be honest...some very light toffeeish sweetness present, but otherwise gives the aroma of a wee dram of blended Scotch. Dark brownish-red color, opaque, with a very fine, lasting head. Flavor is sweet and extremely hot with alcohol, the whiskey and oak again dominating everything and destroying any semblance of balance, showing merest hints of caramel and vanilla, perhaps some spicy hop flavor and mild bitterness appearing late. Mouthfeel is almost overly warming, some nice active carbonation at least, body is of course full. Some tobacco hints appearing towards the end. This is a prime example of how not to do a barrel-aged beer. Both barrel and whiskey are way out of control. Didn’t even finish the 8oz. snifter. Seems like a decent Barleywine underneath, but it was hard to tell.

Oct 10, 2009 tap at the brewpub - Pours dark amber with a small head. It has definite oak in the aroma along with sweet malt. The flavor also has lots of oak over caramel malt and moderately strong hops. It’s full bodied with an oak and hop finish. Did I mention there’s some oak here? You better like it if you’re going to have any chance of liking this brew. Fortunately I do. Very tasty.

Sep 26, 2009 Draft at brewpub. Dark murky crimson color with no head or carbonation. Aroma of your typical English barley-wine, you know, plum, other dark fruit, malt, caramel and light woody. notes The taste was the same with weird strong sour(astringent)barrel flavor in the finish. Decent beer, but not as refined as it should be for an anniversary beer.

Sep 24, 2009 I got a snifter of this at the Wynkoop and while it was not a bad beer I still regretted the purchase. it was a dark chesnut color and looked good. The first sniff was all oak, then vanilla syrup, then oak, good God this is oaky! The flavor was all sadly more of the same. I can barely detect a barleywine underneath the oak flavors but at one point it did taste slightly like cognac. I wish I could try the base barleywine before they oaked the living shit out of it.

Sep 13, 2009 Cloudy plum red color, soft bubbled off white head. Oak and cherry/date/plum scented malts. Little to no alcohol noticed in the nose, but abundant caramel and sweeter maraschino cherry scented malts. Minimal hop presence but oak is very forward. Full, chewy, resinous body. Overdone oak is dry, woody and tannic. Malt profile is sweetened black cherries, dates, plums, figs, etc., Medium hop bitterness but little hop flavor. Good but not great. Primary problems are overdone oak and under-attenuation.

Aug 15, 2009 Tap at the brewpub. Hazy brown. Nose is musty, woody, honey and spices. Where is the wood? Taste at first is mouthwash, then odd sweet flavors come through. Not a bad beer but one of the stranger tasting barleywines I’ve ever had.

Jul 30, 2009 On tap @ Wynkoop, served in a snifter. I was told this was barrel-aged. Clear copper red with a decent retaining light beige head, fair retention. Flavor is huge toasted oak and vanilla and coconut--tastes great (to an extent)--how long was this in barrels? This has got so much vanilla and coconut! Bartender just told me it spent one year in new oak. Flavor has lots of caramel with the aforementioned aromas. Semi-dry finish with some alcohol. Full body with light to moderate carbonation. Very good beer, esp thanks to the new oak barrel.

Apr 17, 2009 Draft Wynkoop 11/4/08-Pours a dark ruby with an off white head. Aroma of sweetness and malt. Flavor the same with a little caramel thrown in. This medium bodied Barley Wine was not bad with a nice balance.
