Pours a deep chestnut brown/black with a robust sandy-brown head. Slight coffee aroma, earthy and minerally. After it warmed and my palate got mixed with food, the anise element became apparent. Medium bodied and more sweet than bitter, this was a great beer to have with a meat-heavy meal. SynergyXJ (506), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Nov 13, 2006 Bottle. Black pour with short lived tan head. Weak aroma, can’t really smell much of anything. Light flavor as well, somewhat sweet, malty, maybe a little molasses? Smooth, well carbonated. Definatly not bad, but not impressive either.
Re-Rate: Just like can8ianben says, it changed a lot as it warmed. Flavor and aroma increased. marcus (1885), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Nov 11, 2006 This dark brown ale poured with a short tan head, eliciting a strong molasses aroma. This is a relatively tasty schwarzbier that just happens to be brewed in Brazil, of all places. It has a nice smoky flavor, and a maltiness that sticks to the tongue. can8ianben (907), Pasadena, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 6, 2006 Cold this tastes of smoke and pale lager. As it warms it feels smoother with more of a dark malt feel. It still has a smoky presence, and doesn’t feel amazingly interesting, but it is different than most beers on the open market. Interesting simply for that fact. EithCubes (2163), Indiana, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Nov 3, 2006 Bottle. Ruby black (really rather dark) with a dark brown head that is volatile and accordingly short-lived. Cloyingly sweet malty aroma. Roast and artificial sweetener are key taste components, but there’s a little chocolate, too. Crisp medium body feels thick going down but also threatens to strip all the enamel from my teeth. Lightest note of hoppiness. Very smooth mf, though, have to credit it for smoothness. This is a little too simple and uninteresting. Rictus (126), Camdenton, Missouri, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Oct 30, 2006 I cant smell anything today but I cant smell anything rank. The head was abit harsh but the beer is like staring into the abyss. The only way to see the slight red in it is to hold it up to the light and look at the edges. The palate is rather thick and you can feel it go down. Hits the spot well. Nice mellow taste. Not particularly interesting but relaxing. Like an older friend who always talks about naval warfare. Wish it were more complex though. I like this beer alot it might be a nice mellow go-to beer. Saarlander (1579), Rancho Cucamonga, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 26, 2006 A nice mellow schwarzbier, nothing overpowering, a hint of smoke, dark malt, citrus aftertaste. Nice, easy drinking brew! Harsebrau (166), Kansas City, Missouri, USA

It was black and had a tan head that left a good lace. The flavor was rich - caramel and maple syrup - and then some lemon. That was odd. Ah well. It’s alright.
