Gromit (449), Port Orchard, Washington, USA Mar 17, 2005 I tried this a few years ago when it first came out and I thought it was watery crap. I must have had a bad bottle as this isn’t entirely crappy.
Pours a pitch-black color with a nice tan head (after a vigorous pour) which left a very nice lace down the glass. It’s already scored higher than the last time I rated it.
Aroma is very sweet, almost too sweet, actually, with some serious fruits hiding in the background.
Flavor is also very sweet with both dark fruits (dates) and some lighter ones (apricots, strawberries?). It kind of reminds me of a wine cooler or malternative, as in "Seagrams Black Cherry" or something like that, only not nearly as crisp. Eh: not bad, but I’m not a fan of the flavor, and it’s too sweet for the style (Schwarzbier).
Palate is creamy, almost like a Sweet/Oatmeal Stout, but kinda sickening-sweet. Overall, I’m glad I gave this another shot as I had a bad representation before, but this definately is not my cup of beer.
Mes_and_Sim (4476), Highgate, Greater London, England Oct 6, 2008 A Mes rate: tap at Beer Exposed. Almost black brown coloured with a thin tan head. Very roasty, slightly sweet, almost sickly malt. Slight card, loads of fruit and a chocolate finish. Much more like your typical sweetish South American stout than like a schwarz. Too thin in the mouth to carry it properly but it’s better than I expected overall. Rune (1807), Tromsø, Norway Oct 1, 2008 100ml at EBF. Black red-tinged body topped by a skinny strip of foam. Roasted aroma of sweet malts. Candy sweetness dominates with dark malts behind. Light bitter tail, but still too sweet. Soft in the mouth (12.09.2008). ericandersnavy (145), denton, Texas, USA Sep 30, 2008 bottle thanks to girlfriend. poured black with a nice light brown head that stayed to the last drop. aroma was sweet and fruity. flavor was fruity with a mild bitter. not a bad schwarzbier, but far from the best i have had. stobbe74 (254), Denmark Sep 27, 2008 Sampled at EBF2008. Pours a dark reddish/brown beer with a lightbrown head. The aroma is weak with malt. The flavor is brown sugar, and the mouthfeel is a little thin. blutt59 (776), Dallas, Texas, USA Sep 26, 2008 bottle, black ruby color, khaki colored head, nose is cocoa and malt, flavor is bitter hoppy cocoa and coffee, finish is bitter and sharp
