Enjoyed this one while watching game 1 of the 2009 World Series with Armed. Phils beat the Yankees 6-1 and Cliff Lee pitched out of his mind! It was apropos to enjoy a great Philly brew during this game. The aroma is woody, almost a bit smoky, with spruce scents. Flavor is the same. Great beer overall.

There is a malty aroma, but some sweetness as opposed to spruce/piney.It has a beautiful dark brown scotch color to it. The flavor is delicious, but I didn’t detect as much spruce as expected.

THOUGHTS: Very herbal. It is truly different and nice. A little like a beer version of a Ricola cough drop. It may not get a perfect rating from me, but I will definitely be buying this again and again. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured dark, brownish amber with a very small, off-white head that mostly diminished. The aroma was nice but too light. There was light molasses, spruce, herbs, Ricola and sap. The initial flavor was sweet and acidic; while the finish was rather sweet, acidic, slightly bitter and lightly tart with a fairly long duration. The medium body was syrupy and then dry with fizzy carbonation and a dry and light to moderately astringent finish.

Bottle split with Dallas. Pours a hazy brownish amber with nice lacing. Aroma is similar to a pumpkin brew - nice spice, maybe some sugar and cinnamon. Taste is somewhat offensive, malt, and not much else.

pours a iced tea brown with a slight white head. Nose is very spicey, almost pumpkinish. Slightly sweet flavor with a fairly flat depth. Sour aftertaste.

12 oz bottle from Spirits RB. Poured a very nice deep red with an average size bright white head. Aroma was odd with some sweetness and a cross between Christmas from the Spruce and the medicinal odors of a doctor’s office. The flavor had much less band aid then the aroma and a slight hint of spruce blended in with some slight earth and wood. Interesting but not for me.

Draught at TJ’s: Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Poured very deep amber/very deep orange/mahogany in color with a large, dense, creamy, off-white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Lightly sparkling. Very good lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet. Tastes of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, Bryer’s coffee ice cream, light nuts, slight wood, light rye, and light cream. Medium body. Lightly chalky texture. Average carbonation. Roasted malt, nut, and chocolate finish. Where is the spruce? Tastes like a Dairy Queen Mud Pie Blizzard.
