Commercial Description:
Golden Boy is a refreshing and thirst-quenching summer ale from Yeastie Boys. A brilliant golden beer, built upon a base of 100% Maris Otter malt and broadly styled upon the popular summer ales of Great Britain, Golden Boy has a distinctive flash of New Zealand terroir from the Nelson grown Sauvin and Styrian Golding hops. There is a most generous hop-smacking bitterness and a lingering depth of malt flavour from our use of the very best malt. Look out for citrus and tropical fruit notes in the beer but remember, unlike lesser summer ales out there, this one contains nothing but the classic ingredients: malt, hops, yeast and water. Another moreish, nutricious and delicious offering from the Yeastie Boys.

Style: English-style Summer Ale Stats: ABV = 4.7%, Bitterness = 30 IBU, Colour = 5 SRM Malt: Maris Otter Pale Malt Hops: Nelson Sauvin, New Zealand Styrian Golding (50/50 mix) Yeast: "London Ale III"

A seriously good summer session ale from one of RateBeer’s own. This brought a ray of sunshine to a bleak, rain-swept Sydney evening. "Summer in a bottle", according to my notes from the day. Golden Boy poured apricot-gold with a solid 1cm head that stayed like Phar Lap a furlong from the finish. Bread-sticks malts, passionfruit, Juicy Fruit chewing gum and blackcurrant tartness in the aroma, plus a faint marijuana herbal note. Presumably from the Sauvin? Some gooseberry greenness on the tongue, lychee and a lip-smacking bitterness. Very sessionable. The sample may have been a month or two past its best, according to its author, so I’d love to try a fresh batch on tap. (Bottle courtesy of Yalnikim - thanks Stu. Nice work.)

Disappointing. For me the beer didn’t live up to the hype. A little hazy, light golden colour. Aroma is rather subdued. Healthy level of bitterness (that grapefuity bitterness), picked up malt charachters but lacking hop flavour.

Golden. light chillhaze that cleared pretty quick and nice fluff in the head. Ripe sweet fruit perfume, almost potpouri. Biscuity malt base builds the foundation for and well balanced fiesta - resinous piney warmth, a touch of citrus pith with lingering bitterness. Wonderful drinkability from such a simple beer.

This is my idea of a great summer ale, although ideally I’d like a lower alc. version for quaffing in quantity. All the same, it’s a great beer. Slightly chill-hazed in the glass, but still attractive. On the nose and palate the Sauvin hops come through beautifully over a biscuity, nutty grain flavour. I love that you can really taste the grain in this beer despite the complex fruity hop flavours. This just tastes like summer.

Pours a pure golden with fluffy white head, which disappears within the few mouthfuls. The yeast comes through quite prominently on the nose, but there is sufficient hop and spice aromas to add some complexity. But both the appearance and aromas fail to live up to the true complexity of this summer style beer. The first mouthful delivers strong floral hop flavours which are incredibly prominent throughout. The malt character is also strong, balancing the hops perfectly and creating a very smooth and palatable beer. There are subtle, sweet honey and spiced ginger flavours which come through nearing the conclusion of every sip (or gulp when one is thirsty), with a beautiful herb finish. The beer never loses its complexity and is incredibly refreshing. Not as sweet as many of our local summer beers, which really works in its favour. Absolutely divine and incredibly drinkable.

Pours golden as youd expect, with a pillowy off white head. Looks very nice with a small amount of chill haze. The aroma is very hoppy, almost like an IPA. These strong hops deliver a basket full of summery fruit to the nose, with a wee bit of malt on the side. The initial taste brings bitterness to the back of the tongue. Then, an explosion of grapefruit occurs leaving malt in its aftermath and finishing dry. Highly drinkable, tasty, complex summery beer.
