Commercial Description:
Yeastie Boys go a little continental this spring with ’Plan K’. While everyone knows the wild and esoteric Belgian ales of lore (full of big fruity esters, spices, high alcohol and drunk from fancy stemmed chalices), the Yeastie Boys would like to draw your attention to the unknown pleasures of Belgian Pale Ale - the balanced and immensely sessionable table beers of Belgian bars and brasserie. ’Plan K’ uses Pearl, Caramunich, Caraaroma and Carafa malts for a rich deep copper colour and moderately malty backbone. It is mildly hopped with Pacific Jade and Motueka hops and then gently fermented, bringing out the subtle fruit and spices of both the fermentation process and the hops, with a yeast strain from the elf-inhabited woodland region of Ardennes, Belgium.

Pours a burnished amber with a fine wheat head that fades away slowly, like an elf melting into the woodland. Aroma i got hints of caraway and cloves from the yeast, smidges of chocolate and toffee and something light and citrusy. Very smooth, velvelty almost and very drinkable, with a clovey, toffee malt finish

On tap while available at the Malthouse. Pleasant, gentle citrus aroma from a moderate but lasting head. Captures the Belgian spice tinted, yeasty flavour style well. A good session beer at this strength.

Tap @ beervana 09. Copper-brown. Strong Belgian east character with plenty of caramel on the nose. An enourmous beer, and only 4.6%! Big Malt and big hops with lots of herby Belgian goodness. Strangely sessionabIe as well. (I was a little drunk writing these notes, but this beer still made a huge impression).

Tap at Beervana ’09. Pours orange/amber, thin off white head.
Aromas are beautiful, clovey, classic Belgian yeast character with a nice toffee malt.
Flavour has the same malty character, followed by a good bitterness and loads of clovey Belgian goodness.
This has the big flavours of a big Belgian beer, while managing to not be a big Belgian beer. A wonderful contradiction.

Currently on tap at Invercargill Brewery. Pours a beautiful deep red-orange with a thick cream-coloured head that shows excellent retention. Very interesting aroma of earthy leafy hops reminiscent of marijuanna, subtle spices, dark toffee. Very flavourful with fruity-toffee malt playing very well off the earthy leafy hop character. Early on I also got a subtle nuance of smoke (burning leaves) that made me instantly think of autumn, but this faded as I drank more. Mouthfeel is full-bodied and velvety. Finish is surprisingly bitter, adding to the overall balance. Very drinkable and delicious. Another winner from Yeastie Boys!
