Commercial Description:
Winter 2009 sees the return of Yeastie Boys much loved debut beer - New Zealand’s original ’Black IPA’. This year’s vintage is built upon the same malt base as the original but has fired up the ’chocolate and orange character’ with more NZ Cascade hops and a zesty fistful (or 10) of imported Styrian Goldings. At 6.0%abv and 50ibu it is rich, hoppy and way too drinkable.

on tap at Beervana. It has been a while and I didn’t write any notes but I recall this being really good. Roasty, bready notes and big citrusy hoppiness balanced perfectly. I recall ithaving some savoury qualities, reminding me of liqorice, especially the aroma. Really good stuff!

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a creamy light brown head. Looks great. The aroma is beautiful dark chocolate, roasted malt and fruity hops. It sure is full and rich in mouthfeel and the flavours carry over superbly. It’s so well balanced I could drink this all day...extremely moreish. A pleasant smooth and bitter finish. Well done Yeasties! (RateBeer Sydney Xmas Gathering 2009 - cheers Yalnikim!)

A real Rolls Royce of a porter - smooth and classy. Tastes like a stronger beer yet stays sessionable and very moreish. Looked great in the glass, even with a group gathering-sized sample. Good length. Sweet aroma with a strong yeastie note, chocolate, grout and a floral violet note. Lovely mouth-filling palate. Toffee notes. Sweet but nicely balanced. Some Styrian spice in the finish. Bitter but with the weight to carry it off. (RateBeer Sydney Xmas 2009 gathering under the harbour bridge. Bottle courtesy of Yalnikim - thanks buddy)

Very dark brown color. Huge roasty nose with huge dark fruit notes. Very hoppy and very potent nose. Big roasty backbone over plums and raspberries in the mouth. Very well balanced. Full body. Great depth. Lingering bitter finish with roasted malt notes just haning in there as well. I thought it was hoppy Stout, not a black IPA. Very well put together beer.

Pours and unctous dark brwon, nearly black with a white foamy head. Aroma I picked up lots of dark coffee and caramel with hints of dark fruit, maybe plums. Not as hoppy as I recalled PKB 2008 to be. Lots of roasted malty goodness and chocolate complexity flavourwise. Lovely creamy mouthfeel. Now all i need to do is build a time machine so I can go back and taste the original again for compare and contrast based fun.

Duffman had this bottled at the brewery and then snail mailed to Canada. He said to drink it quick. I was nervous at a very small sound as I popped the cap but very happy when I got a thick heavy light brown head on a very dark beer. Dark black roasted nose, cofee and very dark chocolate and a hint of sourness I only link to "orange" because of the description. That first sip makes you want more! Thick body with a bit of an oily residue. Lots of chocolate. I notice the hops but do not find them overly strong; tasty but not attention seeking for my hop loving palate. Enjoyable long lasting aftertaste; citrus and bitter chocolate. Glad I’m drinking this alone ’cause I don’t want to share!

Handpull at the Malthouse on Launch night. Pours very dark with brown tinge. Very complex. Hoppy bitterness followed by toasty malt with a big dry finish. Adjectives fail me.

Earthy hop aroma with a little spicy-ness. Initial sweetness, followed by some citrus and spicy hop, with a firmly roasty and bitter finish. Staunch flavours but balanced well with nothing OTT.
