Happy beer smell when opened makes a good first impression. Deep ruddy brown in color shows light through the glass well. Taste, though, is kind of standard. Perhaps I’m too used to American iterations of the style, which would involve more bitterness. As it is, a pleasant English session beer. Although borrowing into a glass, I do find some more fresh hops taste. Just want to get through whatever Youngs beers I can find before the brewery shuts down. bindpmc (88), San Diego, California, USA

Aroma is not memorable at all except for some expected sweet malt, maybe some citrus. Not that there is anything wrong with this one, but it is just as forgettable as it is easy-drinky. Sure, you almost get some yeast or some burnt wood, maybe even some caramel or toffee. But the end result is just nothing better than "this is a good beer". That is in no way a condemnation of course, but it perfectly represents the limbo in which this beer lives. Anyway, it is not bad: not too sweet, not too hoppy, not too watery, and basically not too anything. (shrugs) JoeMcPhee (5025), Jackson Heights, New York, USA

Sweet malty aroma, woody, heavier caramel than the St. George’s. Very woody, even a bit of oakiness. Flavour is quite sweet and caramelly. Earthy hops and a fairly short finish. Moderate bitterness. Woody and slightly herbal finish. OK, but nothing special. Very Fuggles-y aroma, which I don’t really care for. weeare138 (936), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 30, 2006 Appears a copper toned dark amber with a small off white head that fades into a mild filmy cap. Plenty of sudsy lacing is left around the glass like a soapy ring.
Smell is of light caramel and toffee candy.
Taste is of the same caramel and toffee aromas.
Mouthfeel is fizzy up front with a toffee and caramel like sweetness that is rough around the edges with tight and tiny hop bite.
Not bad. Definitely a Brit brew with a gentle chewiness that caresses both sweetness and bitterness.

| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 2/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | May 17, 2006 Pours a clear brown color with red hues. Smells of malt. Yeast upfront is a little surprising. Very quick and thin beer. Easy to drink but lacking in complexity or character. I lugged this damn bottle all the way back from VA and am not very excited about it right now. blankboy (3239), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Aroma of sweet malt, grain, fruit and light hops. Slightly watery flavour of sweet malt, fruit and a very light bitter finish. Light to medium bodied. Nothing bad about it but it’s kind of ’blah’, a mediocre English Ale. dyetube (414), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 11, 2006 This beer pours a deep amber/brown color with a small tan head. Vellow mellowish nutty smell and flavor. This is a very fine ale from a great brewer! Cheers! biznizness (952), Mooresville, North Carolina, USA
