yemenmocha (344), Glendale, Arizona, USA May 6, 2009 Bottle of normal carbonation example (not nitro can).
Pours very dark brown to near black with off-colored head. Nose is rich with chocolate, both dark and milk. Palate carries a huge chocolate influence, perhaps one of the few beers that just is like chocolate itself and not a mere resemblance. Carbonation is not bad.
Finish is sweet, almost too sweet. Good dessert beer.
illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA May 5, 2009 Clear dark brown with a big light-brown frothy head. Aroma is cocoa powder and roasted malts with a touch of milk chocolate. Flavor is dark chocolate up front and slightly acidic roasted barley in the finish. Moderate bitterness. Smooth albeit a little watery. High drinkability. A good intro chocolate stout. blueturk (68), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA May 4, 2009 Pours nicely with moderately high brown thick head. Fairly quickly fading. Slight chocolate notes when first poured. Flavor is satisfiying but lacking body and depth. A bit of black patent bitterness. Not a real complex beer to be a "double". noompa (130), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 3, 2009 On tap @ Flossmoor. Lovely old favorite. Muted flavors, dominated by a rich chocolate, ash and some smoke. Luxurious mouthfeel, very silky. Think: drinking a chocolate truffle. bblack99 (196), Kansas City, Missouri, USA May 3, 2009 Pours a deep brown, almost black, but with a watery quality that lets some light through. Small, short-lived tan head.
Light aroma of chocolate, nuts, and malt. Slippery, watery mouthfeel. Without the addition of chocolate, the base flavors would be decent, but the light chocolate flavor clashes with the bitterness underneath.
Not on the same level as Rogue Chocolate Stout, the pieces just didn’t come together well in this beer. Block (363), West Lafayette, Indiana, USA May 2, 2009 Black pour with a super creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Extremely smooth texture. Flavor is mostly chocolate and caramel without too much roasted or coffee character. Slightly sour finish. Really smooth and really good. ljstephenson (111), Lawton, Oklahoma, USA May 1, 2009 Updated: May 8, 2009Deep brown pour with a tan head, aroma has strong notes of chocolate and coffee, taste is very smokey malt, dry from beginning to end and very chalky, finishes dry with no bitterness, I felt this stout was too dry and not enough flavor. Changed (161), Ithaca, New York, USA May 1, 2009 Pint bottle. Pours black, not thick, tiny brown head, no lacing. Aroma of... plastic? A plastic wrapped bar of cheap chocolate? Not enjoyable in the least. Flavor is thin, watery, and not very flavorful. Really disappointed in this beer. Not sure where these ratings are coming from...
