HOPSHUNTER (376), Tampa, Florida, USA Mar 8, 2009 Can. Poured jet black with a dense brown head. Aroma is of sweet malt. Chocolate flavor is pretty pronounced but never overpowering. Very balanced chocolate to malt ratio. I would like a bit more carbonation in it. Great stout. JaBier (1130), Capital City, Ohio, USA Mar 8, 2009 On tap at the Pub at Polaris. Pours black with a medium beige head. Malty aroma with plenty of cocoa. Chocolatey flavor that comes out a lot better than when it’s bottled. Very good beer. Cavie (1317), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Mar 8, 2009 Very interesting. Has a VERY dark appearance with a hint of chocolate aroma. The taste is more of the chocolate on the finish. Bitters as it warms... jonno (542), Brisbane, Australia Mar 7, 2009 Fantastic deep stout...of course lots of chocolate. Perhaps too sweet to finish a whole bottle, but otherwise great RaphaelN (195), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Mar 3, 2009 Bottle from the LCBO. I looked at it though to myself "Double Chocolate?" After becoming friends with Brooklyn’s Black Chocolate and Bell’s Expedition, I wasn’t expecting to be impressed. But did it deliver! Dark chocolate, coffee and malted chocolate dominate the palate, giving way to a bit of roasted malt after-taste with lingering chocolate and a bit of syrup. The brewery deserves a nominee for this one. angrypirate06 (678), Texas, USA Mar 1, 2009 Nitro bottle. Pours black, with thick, off white head. Lots of little bubbles, long lasting. Excellent lacing. Aroma is strong chocolate, nutty malts. Creamy mouthfeel, with little to no discernible carbonation. Sweet chocolate taste with some dark fruits. Hints of smoke on the back end. slowrunner77 (58), reno, USA Feb 28, 2009 "Young’s Double Chocolate is better in the can (the oatmeal is better in the bottle...too boring on nitro), but this one is incredibly smooth, deceptively strong in flavor, and makes a perfect float. Although Rogue Chocolate Stout is this beers polar opposite within the style, they are my two favorite chocolate stouts."
MoritzF (4859), Bochum, Germany Feb 26, 2009 (bottle, sampled at room temperature) Black coloured hue with a big brown foamy head. Sweet and slightly roasted malty aroma with distinctive notes of cacao and chocolate, accompanied by traces of coffee and Port. Bitter and slightly sweet flavour, medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Darl and roasted malty taste, again with aromatic notes of milk-chocolate; the mouthfeel gets drier towards the chocolate-laden, moderately bitter and roasty finish with notes of coffee in the aftertaste. A tad too sweet for my liking but nevertheless an aromatic Stout (26.II.09).
