Tripplebrew (486), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Feb 8, 2009 Pours a really opaque choc. brown with very lthick white head. Aroma is choc. malts and nuts. Flavor is dark hot chocolate with some bitter matls. Body is light with fair carbonation. berkshirejohn (1763), Bracknell, Berkshire, England Feb 1, 2009 50cl bottle. Deep opaque mahogany with a dense milk chocolate head; roast malts dominate the aroma with some bitter chocolate showing through; rich creamy chocolate texture and flavour, rather like drinking chocolate; some initial sweetness, but soon giving way to an intense chocolate-laden bitterness. The finish becomes slightly sweeter again, but also slightly smoky. A complex, well-bodied and satisfying stout. Brewsmith (136), Torrance, California, USA Feb 1, 2009 From a 0.5L bottle purchased locally poured into an imperial pint. Aroma has hints of chocolate, coffee, figgy plum and a little roast. Color is a jet black with a creamy tan head that is leaving nice lace as it subsides. Bittersweet chocolate is in the front with a touch of sweetness that fades into the roast. Bitterness is firm but balanced. Thick creamy mouthfeel with a lingering roast/toast/bitter chocolate aftertaste that fades dry. An excellent stout that is complex and satisfying. njbfr (105), New Jersey, USA Jan 31, 2009 Updated: Feb 28, 2009Blown away! Was expecting something too sweet and was pleasantly surprised by the balance of this stout. Pours nearly black with a thick head. Rich, chocolaty aroma. Heavy roasted malt flavor with the finish leaving a slight bitterness of dark chocolate. One of my favorites. Nitrocan gives it a perfect head but I think it tastes better from the bottle. revans (35), Salem, Ohio, USA Jan 31, 2009 The very first chocolate stout I tasted. What an intro! Almost black in color. Great lace as it goes down. The flavor is chocolate...duh! This is the stout I measure all stouts by. Few better, a lot don’t measure up. EatsTacos (13), , Yukon, Canada Jan 28, 2009 Pours a near black colour with a frothy, chunky off-white head. Great lacing on the glass.
The nose is burnt and roasted malted barley. Some sweetness and hops are somewhere in the background.
The taste is sweet caramel malt first. Really quite sweet and sugary. The taste moves into a bitter chocolate flavour and finishes pretty dry. Very milky. Expresso and coffee flavours are very upfront. Not much hop bitterness at all.
Mouthfeel is medium and creamy. The carbonation is medium and is somewhat sharp.
I took off some points for drinkability due to the sweetness but thats just me. Very good beer. fredthecat (179), Canada Jan 24, 2009 alcohol, light coffee, and malt smell. its black with a lasting beige head. nice and smooth, lightly sweet tastes like chocolate. pretty good, kind of standard feeling over all but pleasant enough
