This starts out w/ all the right intentions, but disappoints at the end. It starts w/ a nice chocolate nose, tan head w/ a dark body and some up front chocolate flavor, but finishes a bit thin an watery. The body of this beer is too thin to make it work.

It does not make a big impression in the aroma. Fine, dark color and good head. Great taste, with lots of bitterness and chocolate.

On draft; nice looking...dark brown/black with a creamy light brown head. Aroma of sweet chocolate; some hint of roasted malt, not much. Flavor was very good initially, but as is often the case for this style, the flavor got worse as I drank. Something that I don’t like. However, it was still very good for the style and good overall. Tasted of milk sugar and chocolate; sweet.

Since the Young’s "Ram Brewery" has closed and many of the Young’s beers are now considered "retired", my friend Rob and I had a Young’s beer tasting on 2/08/2007 so that we could try all of the Young’s brews we could get our hands on before they’re gone...

Tasting Notes (Bottle): Young’s Double Chocolate Stout pours a dark chocolate brown color. The crown is frothy and foamy, of average size, and tan in color. Surprisingly, the aroma is mostly dominated by vanilla. Roasted malt, chocolate, and some vanilla comprise the flavor. The finish is roasty and dry. I fear that this bottle is slightly oxidized as I am detecting some cardboard flavors as well. However, in the case of this particular beer, I don’t really think it is too much of a detriment to the overall flavor as the oxidation actually adds a bit of dry, oakiness to it. This beer has a full body to it. It has been awhile since I’ve had the bottled version of this beer and even though I don’t like it quite as much as the nitro can, it does not disappoint! 16.9 oz bottle; 5.2% ABV; Nov 06.

Tasting Notes (Nitro Can): For some reason, I always love the sound of the that pop and gurgling noise when opening a nitro can... Young’s Double Chocolate Stout pours out in a soft and silky black stream. It has a fairly small, but extremely dense and thick tan head that lasts from beginning to end. The bubbles are ultrafine which also lends to the super creamy, milky, and smooth texture of this beer. There is some vanilla in the aroma, but the flavor is all chocolate - dark and creamy. I’ve always referred to this beer as the "Nestle Quik" (now "Nesquik") of the beer world since it is so rich, milky, and full of chocolate flavor! I always enjoy this beer and my wife loves it too (bonus!). If the newly branded Wells & Young’s Brewing Company discontinues the Double Chocolate Stout, I may have to start boycotting them (I know my wife probably will!)... 14.9 oz nitro can; 5.2% ABV; 21 Sep 07(21J6 00:37).

It’s amazing how different the exact same beer can taste between a bottled version and a nitro can version! I like them both, but I actually prefer the nitro can version of this beer if I had to pick between them (plus its easier to find)...

Bottle. Black color with a medium brown head. Bitter sweet chocolate flavors with a touch of roasted malts at the finish. It really pays to let this one warm as it grows increasingly rich and creamy and the chocolate bursts forward. A lighter body than I expected (but still appreciated).
