Color is a solid black, with a large, lush, lovely brown head. Aroma: soft and creamy, with a subdued cocoa content, sweet and mild. On the palate, however, things take a change for the decidedly better! Niiiiiice, oh, so, nice, with substantial chocolate feeling, although it doesn't actually come in strong at first. At the end of the swallow, there it is, that real chocolate essence. WOW! Ever so tasty, and I'm not even such a chocolate nut, but you've got to give it up, there it is, and it tastes great!!! Hops are minimal, here, and malt is king! Texture is smooth, and taste is sublime! You never forget the chocolate, for the flavor subsists, and is sublime! Fully integrated, perfectly balanced, this is one excellent stout, with an excellent addition of flavor! Another great one from Young's! The delicious flavor never ever ends after the bottle empties, but the flavor lingers long after! (I've had it in the nitro-can, too, and it was not enhanced by that gimmick!)

0.5 l bottle. Black with creamy tan head. Strong sweetish milk chocolate aroma with hint of coffee, raisins and caramel. Dryer yet very chocolatey flavor with soft coffee notes, some bitterness and bitter chocolate in the finish. I like very much dark chocolate but this is more like a mellow milk chocolate or milkshake.

Dark, dark, dark brown, some ruby around the edges, head didn't last at all. Draft. Some aroma of roasted malts, but not much. The flavor was of espresso and some milk chocolate. The finish comes up surprisingly short. I keep trying this beer every few years, and am always disappointed by the thin, almost watery, very short finish.

Tried this on tap when I was on holidays in London in May loved it then, back in oz had to settle for the 500ml bottle but still tastes great. Chocolate everywhere in this one, from the nose through to the taste also pick up some hints of liquorice as well as roasted coffee flavours. This one is a luxury that I am keen to return to again and again. Cheers!

Pours a completely opaque dark brown/black witha rather diassapointing 1 cm tan head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is malty with hints of chocolate and coffee. Start is thin and uncharacterisitic, leading to a rich a chocolately finish with a bit of a smokey flavor. This beer is pretty one dimensional and the palate is really too thin and carbonated for me. A tasty drink, but not as good as I expected. Bottled.

9.23.04 .5l bottle. Huh, I’ve never taken notes on this one? I reliable standby at least in its ubiquitous availability. Big and black looking in my imperial pint glass. Aromas are mildly roasty, sweet chocolate, just sweet in general. Flavors are so sweet as to create a somewhat cloying mouthfeel; accompanied by some dry roastiness, it’s not such a palatable brew. This is one that seems perhaps more tolerable on nitro tap or can. Mouthfeel is otherwise appropriately light and wet. Alcohol never interferes and this can be a fine session brew. The chocolate at times seems really over the top and never really mellows throughout the pint. Whatever, it’s an average quaff.

I wish that Doc from Steinbeck's "Cannery Row" could have had some of this for his beer milkshake. Dark, dark brown with a frothy, tan head. Dark chocolate (surprise!) aroma. Burst of chocolate flavor. Unusual in that it starts out tasting like sweet milk chocolate but has a fairly dry dark chocolate finish. Some coffee hints as well. However, the dominant chocolate flavor makes this a somewhat one-dimensional stout. Silky, rich palate. An enjoyable dessert beer.
