(bottle, sampled at room temperature) Black coloured hue with a big brown foamy head. Sweet and slightly roasted malty aroma with distinctive notes of cacao and chocolate, accompanied by traces of coffee and Port. Bitter and slightly sweet flavour, medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Darl and roasted malty taste, again with aromatic notes of milk-chocolate; the mouthfeel gets drier towards the chocolate-laden, moderately bitter and roasty finish with notes of coffee in the aftertaste. A tad too sweet for my liking but nevertheless an aromatic Stout (26.II.09).

Deep black with medium brown head. Smells very spicy, of chocolate, with a very strong aroma. Has an alcoholic/chemical smell. Very smokey flavor, frothy taste at first then thinner and lighter. The aftertaste is smooth and milky.

Bottled. An aroma of red wine met me when I opened the bottled. It was followed by cocoa and dark chokolate when poured. Notes of roasted malt too. The beer is black, with a decent head that looks almost nitro-dispensed, but with some large bubbles. Rich flavor of roasted malts and coffee. Chocolate too, but not in the usual way for a stout, you can feel the chocolate flavor, almost like when you eat dark chocolate. The finish is long, dry and bitter. Nice lacings. When finished rating it, I found myself a good bite of dark, quality chocolate. In my opinion, that’s how this beer should be enjoyed. (060126)

What a thick, chocolatey head! I bought this only because I like Young’s brews and hadn’t tried it before. I was amazed that I liked it... a thick, rich malty taste, mildly hopped, and, yes, chocolate. My girlfriend Linda wants to try this now, and she only occassionally imbibes pale lagers, being a wine drinker. But she likes her chocolate. She’ll like this stout.

Very dark. Chocolate and roasted malt flavors. Quite smooth. Light hops in the finish. Better in the bottle.

Black chocolate aroma and a hint of lactic. Black color, light brown head, good lace. Moderate sweet, very much chocolate, light roasted. Coffee and bitterness in the finish. Very nice beer but there are better stouts and better beers by Young.

Pours pitch black with tan head and great lacing. Aroma is heavily chocolate (obviously) with a roasted coffee (with cream) aroma. Flavor is like hot chocolate with essence of smoke. Perfect for the campfire! Overall, this is a great stout if you're into the subtleties of most stouts. The chocolate is heavy but everything else is pronounced as well.

Bottle. Pours a black colour with a thick tan head. Sweet chocolate aroma. Malty bitter chocolate flavor. Has a sweet aftertaste of chocolate and some bitterness.
