| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 3, 2006 i really like this beer. it’s not quite love, but out of the chocolate stouts i’ve tasted (limited quantity), it beats out a few. why? the marshmallow mouthfeel. it’s a sweet stout. it’s a beautiful dar beer that really has a lot to say. i can taste the hoppiness, but it’s just the right amount; not overbearing, just noticable. it’s more malty. it has a nice head on it too - off white, foamy but sustained. i’ve never really liked the flavor of chocolate, but in beer it is definitely ok. i’m also happy to find a beer i enjoy that has a bit of espresso flavor to it. appropriate bitterness on the tail end. it’s a wonderful wintery ale. troysworktable (109), Washington, USA

This is an awesome stout, probably the best I have ever had. At first, I thought it tasted like a dark chocolate candy bar, but as I savored it—turned it over in my mouth, smelled it again, tasted it again—I realized that this is really like drinking a chocolate pie. The tastes of the graham cracker pie crust, the chocolate filling, and the whipped cream topping are present, along with the texture of the pie itself.
The appearance is gorgeous: an opaque black is crowned with a brown, thick, creamy head. The thickness of the head doesn’t allow for much aroma to sneak through, really the beer’s only flaw. The aroma that does come through has a slight alcohol smell and a slight spiciness.
This is somewhat deceptive, because the flavor is less "harsh" and more rich and complex than alluded to by the nose. The initial flavor and the finish flavor are sweet, with only a hint of bitterness. The feel in the mouth is thick and creamy, a great texture. The maltiness comes through in the flavors of pie crust, dark chocolate, and cream. There is also a slight smokiness that plays against and with the aforementioned spiciness. The alcohol smell is less apparent in the flavor.
I strongly recommend you get hold of a bottle of this if you are able. It was a great beer with steak, and would also be good with a bowl of ice cream or a slice of cake. For that matter, it would be a good beer to just curl up with Moby Dick on a winter evening to read.
(I have had this in the can as well, and the can somewhat mars the flavor. Find a bottle, or on tap, if you can.) dirtydawg (2), USA does not count | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 31, 2006 Rich chocolat taste with a slight sweet after taste. Does leave slight after bitterness though. But chocolate, lots of it, and coffee dominate this stout! handsomejn (28), Arkansas, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 14, 2007 This beer reminds me of a liqueur cordial, like Khulua with splash Bailey’s in it. It tastes of dark chocolate, with a hint of coffee and cream. There is a subtle smell of chocolate but not much else there, but all else is great. It is semi-sweet, dark opaque black in color with a beautiful tan head. It leaves a wonderful pattern on the glass. It not only tastes wonderful but it is so beautiful to see. It is absolutely delicious, front, middle and especially on the finish. The residual makes breathing a treat as you continue to enjoy the long finish from the front of your tongue to the back of your sinus. leeburg (149), Juneau, Alaska, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 27, 2007 This is my favorite sweet stout. Chocolate and malts everywhere. Super smooth. Very available where I’m from, so while it’s nothing to cherish, it gets a high rating from me for being so enjoyable on a regular basis. Earlier Rating: 5/31/2007 Total Score: 4.7 Had this on tap, canned and bottled, and would rank them respectively. I have to rate this for what it is and not compare it to the big stouts. I think this beer is just great. Chocolate is everywhere but not overwhelming. Amazing mouthfeel, very creamy but not too heavy. On tap there was more caramel flavor. Really unbeatable for a sweet stout. GlenVargas (120), El Paso, Texas, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Aug 26, 2007 I feel that I should preface this rating by writing, "I love chocolatey stouts!" And, the Young’s Double Chocolate (on tap at Hemingway’s in El Paso!) is most certainly that. I also don’t have any beef with nitro beers; the nitro gives this beer a smooth, creamy mouthfeel that makes it even more reminscent of a milkshake. The appearance is nice ’n’ thick with a tight chocolate cream head; the smell is extra chocolate (not hints of it, but big whiffs); the taste is true to the label; I expected a little of the coffee/roast to show up in this beer, but it stays sweet with very minimal bitterness from start to finish. The chocolate flavor even hangs around long after the beer is gone. Now, I’ll get a little weird and say that this beer also reminded me of Saturday morning cartoons because it really, to me, smelled like the chocolate milk pinning the bottom of the bowl after finishing Cocoa Puffs. Awesome! I think, in terms of what the brewers intended for this beer, it’s a complete success.
