first time I heard about chocolate beer I thought it was a joke ... first time I tasted this brew I thought it was suprisingly balanced but rather difficult to get accustomed to ... today I think this is one of the greatest stouts around .... it is surprisingly dry, the (dark belgian bitter) chocolate appears only in the finish, it is smooth and well balanced ... the best about this brew however is how it pours: almost crude oil dark with a finesse of liquid gold ... pure simple beauty ....

Nice dark pour, mild choc. aroma which is very pleasing. The chocolate does not over power, it mingles just right with the other characteristics of this great beer. It is a excelent breakfast lunch or dinner beer.

Deep dark pour with a nice tad head. Nice toasted Chocolate aroma with some coffee and a bit of hops. Flavors are chocolate and and malt with a nice bitterness interplayed. You could drink this all night (on an empty stomache) A real world class beer.

bottle. this is one nice brew! very smooth and drinkable. I thought the chocolate flavors would come through a little stronger than they did. the finish seemed a little more of coffee than chocolate or I would have rated even higher. Still a "Sweet" stout!
update 11/27/06 had this on nitro tap over the weekend and was a bit disappointed. seemed to have more of a bittersweet chocolate, bordering on a slightly sour, flavor than what the bottle had to offer. maybe it was the nitro, maybe it was an old keg, but this version rates a 3.6

Wow! Pours (from a bottle) dark, black with a tan head that quickly dissipates. Not too much aroma, which I took to mean that it wasn’t heavily hopped. Aromas was of chocolate liquor On first sip --- bam! CHOCOLATE! Tastes include that bitter chocolate that your mom used to cook with and also a chocolate bread. I loved it, but would have to be in the mood to drink it. I bet with nitrokeg it would get a few more points for a silky mouth feel

Dark, and definitely chocolatey. Goes down smooth and creamy with a slight bitterness (almost inperceptible). I could find this a great session beer if it was more readily available in the US. This tasting was from the can (I have a bottle in reserve for later). Excellent when served ice cold. Head stays for a while, while contrasting nicely with the pitch black body. slight lacing of the head (but then again I had an old glass), It sits there staring, asking "do you want more?!" Slightly sweet, but not overpowering. Less malt detection than I would have expected in such a dark stout.

Draught can. Dark color, tan head. Full bodied and flavored. Roasted chocolate and smoky flavors. Good smooth stout.

Wonderfully rich and creamy. I am glad that they did not market this as an imperial. Not too sweet, just right. Dark chocolate and coffee blended well together. This is one of my favorite sweet stouts and I recommend it.
