Gusler (2656), Tucson, Arizona, USA Mar 31, 2002 Black in color, chocolate head is creamy and long lasting, sheets of lace cling to the glass. ’WOW’ what an aroma, chocolate, coffee, roasted grains, sweet, makes your mouth water. Lovely malt sweet start, full at the top, the finish is dry, lightly acidic, hops quite evident, light carbonation. ’Got to be one of the best stouts in the whole world’, and is in my top 5 stouts master list.
JCB (949), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 19, 2008 500ml from Total Wine, Durham. I actually don’t know if I’ve ever had this beer before. Absolutely splendid pour with a nice dimpled head. Nose is creamy milk chocolate, and the taste is refreshingly understated. The sweet notes don’t overpower the relative complexity of the malts but are integrated into the overall smoothness of the brew. Some hops in there but only faintly detectable, and the beer’s a bit thin. Enjoyable nonetheless. fredandboboflo (440), East Setauket, New York, USA Aug 18, 2008 Can. Aroma of sweet chocolate, tootsie roll, bitter chocolate. Flavor weaker with the same notes. Watery palate. Pleasant, but a bit blah with excess water. LilBeerDoctor (442), East Setauket, New York, USA Aug 18, 2008 Can. Prettiest pour ever. Light chocolate brown descends and becomes a darker brown with a thick thick, foamy light tan head (so much prettier than Guinness haha). Aroma of nice bitter chocolate, tootsie roll. Flavor of lots of bitter chocolate. Creamy mouthfeel, although slightly watery. One of the best chocolate beers out there. An old favorite of mine...you can’t go wrong with this one. Ljunkan (120), Karlstad, Sweden Aug 18, 2008 Bottle. Dark, almost black color with a brown remaining foam. Slightly burnt, roasted malt aroma with some chocolate. Roasted flavour with notes of dark chocolate and malty sweetness followed by a decent bitterness. Palate is very smooth and nice. Thomo (2), Doncaster, Australia does not count Aug 18, 2008 Intense! A brooding dark chocolate colour. Rich enough palate with the dark chocolate holding up the middle, with the milk chocolate softening out the finish. This is a supping beer to savour!
