Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottled. This is a slightly hazy deep golden beer with a fresh malty aroma. The flavour is heavily citrus based with some spiciness. The finish is a bit sour. It has a slight fizz but otherwise a somewhat watery consistency.

No idea how this beer has such a high rating. It has nearly no taste at all. Slight citrus-y aftertaste. It is very smooth, but almost too watery. Drinkable, but no flavor to it.

Appearance: Pours a clear, light copper body with a small, fizzy, white head. Smell: Light aroma of toffee-scented maltiness, spice-minded hops, and a fine, delicate yeastiness. Taste: Sweetish toffee malt flavor tempered by a spicy, earthy hoppiness. Splash of mineral water. Still manages to finish a bit on the sweet side. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: Not a bad lil’ English ale that’s certainly quite easy to drink.
