Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

500ml Bottle: Aroma of grassy and earthy hops as well as some caramel. Poured copper/amber in color with a small, off-white head that diminished immediately. Hazy. Very slightly sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and light to medium bitter. Tastes of caramel, English hops, grassy hops, and salt. Medium body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, hoppy, salty finish.

50 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden orange with a lacing white head. Fruity to spiced hops and light malty aroma. Flavour is mildly spiced but mainly sweet caramel malt. A light fruity hops note appears before the finish. Goes rather dry and bitter into the finish, mild wood note too.

A good beer with a nice copper body. Some nice malt and barley accents in the aroma. Taste is somewhat malty, some nice hop bitterness comes through though. Ending is minimal, a good session beer.

A- Pours an orangish copper color with a large off white head that leaves quite a bit of lacing. S- The nose consists of sweet floral notes, and pine hopiness. T- The taste is very abrreviated for lack of a better word. Starts with a rich wheat flavor and ends quickly with a slight pine biterness with little to no aftertaste. M- The mouthfeel is thick with a moderate amount of carbonation. D- This beer seems very drinkable. Not my favorite but it is easy to kick back a few in a night.

Pours medium amber with a 1.5 inch thick frothy tan head. Has a complex aroma of smooth barely, nut, grass, sugar and mineral. Flavor is mild, slighty rich malty, a little nutty, a bit dry. Mouthfeel is a little syrupy. The finish is a little sweet and a little bitter. A somewhat unusual ale, but a good one.

0.5 l bottle. Copper color with small head. Resiny and perfumed hop nose with hint of orange marmelade and caramel. Bittersweet, malty, caramelly and toasty flavor with notes of resiny and fruity hops as well as orange. I used to like this more, now it is just good but not excellent beer.

Poured a clear golden amber color with a nice tall head. There was a slightly sweet malty aroma. The taste had a mild hoppiness initially followed by a dry mild bitterness. The finish was kind of mediocre and lacked much of anything special

his beer looked and smelled much better than it tasted. The flavor is very confusing with a nice hop presence up front which quickly gets overpowered by a lactic, musty maltiness that is not very pleasant. I was hoping for more from this beer becuase of the great things I had read about it.
