Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Poured a clear golden amber color with a nice tall head. There was a slightly sweet malty aroma. The taste had a mild hoppiness initially followed by a dry mild bitterness. The finish was kind of mediocre and lacked much of anything special

his beer looked and smelled much better than it tasted. The flavor is very confusing with a nice hop presence up front which quickly gets overpowered by a lactic, musty maltiness that is not very pleasant. I was hoping for more from this beer becuase of the great things I had read about it.

golden appearance with slight head. flavor is very subtle with a strong malt component, possibly with some caramel malt and a mild hop flavor at the end. not bad, but was expecting more

Poured to a dark golden ale with a thick off-white head. Aromas of hops. Initial flavor of balanced hops and malts. Slightly bitter towards the end of the pull with carbonation being the main sensation to the palate. Not a bad beer. Refreshing and balanced.

(500 ml bottle (stamped "31/08/08") from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/scarborou target=blank>Oak Hill Beverage) Actually not that special...Pours slightly cloudy bright amber with three fingers of biscuit head that recedes to a foamy 1/4" or so. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, vanilla and caramel. Palate is smooth but thinnish, very lightly prickly. Lots of broken, weepy lacing. Tastes at first of almost all hops, and not very good ones at that - pine, grapefruit, bitter but rather bland and crappy tasting hop notes. Also has a sourish dishrag quality. As it warms things get a little better with some malt sweetness finally showing - a little bready with some caramel. Decent enough I guess but seems overrated.

Bottle. Golden in color with a decent head. Some hops aromas. Slight spiced stuff going on in the taste.
