Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottle. Golden in color with a decent head. Some hops aromas. Slight spiced stuff going on in the taste.

Large bottle- Deep amber gold with light brown head. Complex hops aroma with malts that feel smooth on the pallet. Like caramelized bananas with a bit of a hop bite. A nice balance that left me wanting more, can’t wait to sample again.

aroma of malts and hops and banana’s. light brown almost amber color with a thin head. the flavor is great with a malt/hop combo that left me wanting more. palate was very smooth and left a slight bitter after thought. I must be careful with this one, could polish of a lot of these quick!

Hoppy flowery aroma. Hazy golden amber color and medium lacy sticky head. Sweet malty with generous flowery hops. Overwhelming dry hop finish. Balanced and original. Good beer.

pours a hazy amber with one finger of beige head. smells like butterscotch and caramel. butterscotch carries over into the flavor a bit and is married with honey and a fruity hop bite. has a nice slick smooth feel as it slides down your throat. finishes nice and balanced. excellent beer.

Pours a copper amber color with minimal head and light lacings. Nice bitter-sweet flavor. Finish is alternating between sweet toasted malts and slight bitterness. Does have some citrus undertones. A bit spendy for an everyday brew but a nice occasional treat. Recommended to Engish Ale fans.

Pours an amber color with a white head. Aroma is sweet up front with the caramel malts and has some bitterness of the citrus hops behind it. Thick palate with not much carbonation. Flavor is mostly sweet of caramel malts and has a slightly stronger bitter finish then I was expecting. Better then I was expecting.
