Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottle (500ml). Poured a bronze with copper highlights and a small, rocky off-white head which was mostly lasting. Aroma was of strange grassy hops, odd citrus, with some toffee and marmalade. Taste was different in a welcome way, very earthy, with more citrus, toffee, marmalade and nutty in the end. Body was medium with a thick texture, soft carbonation, creamy mouthfeel and a good length finish.

50 cl bottle. BB January 08. Pours amber orange with a lovely full white head. Aroma has malts, caramel, buiscuit. Medium bodied. Taste is of dusty old malts & fruits. Close to be over the top & also very ordinary.

Had this beer on 2/5/2004. Aroma is a light crisp malt scent. Color is a bright deep gold with very good carbonation and light head. Taste is crisp and bitter. Starting with a full/medium body it goes down with a crisp feel. Finish comes on bold with a full malt flavor back by a strong round bitterness. Overall it’s well rounded, full and lets you know when your drinking it. This is the kind of brew you think someone would be served at an old English pub when they ask for an pint of Ale. It just seems to have that old real beer flavor going on.

Bottle. Cherry, toffee malt, and mild pine hops aroma. Hazy amber with large head. Light cherry and toffee malt flavor with a mild hops finish. A bit light finish but nice drinkable beer.
