Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Copper in color. Aroma was yeasty and slightly fruity. Flavor was a very good balance of malts and hops. Also had a nice hint of fruity sweetness.

An unpretentious beer with luxurious flavors. Hop and malt happily mingle in this golden-amber colored ale. Lingering but clean aftertaste. Scrumptious and highly drinkable.

Nicely hopped strong ale pours to a deep golden wiht a nice sized head. The effervescence is really good on this particular brew, small bubbles which never really overwhelm yet remain for quite some time. It begins with malt which quickly evens out into a smooth, lightly hopped finish. There certainly are hints of banana to be found in this one, but I didn’t notice much orange as the previous posters had suggested. Overall a fantastic beer, though slightly overpriced in this country.

bottle - pours cloudy orange with massive white head bringing out strong aromas of malt, sugar and a little fruit; drinks smooth and sweet with an enjoyable slight bitterness

Dark golden honey. Bitter sweet fruity aroma with notes of alcohol. The flavor is strong of a good malt blend - with a nice medium sweetness and a strong bitterness that lasts in the after taste.

This is a real good session beer. I could sit in the pub with me mates and down this stuff absentmindedly. But, every now and again this brew jerks your attention back to it, proclaiming in a not-so-quiet english way that it won’t stand for the folly of being ignored. This beer has a good, strong flavor and character; a real Winston Churchill of British strong ales. Carry on, lads!

Part of an English Bitter tasting in Ocean NJ on 10/06/2007. This one fell outside of the bitter category we had concentrated on in the tasting, but we wanted a style contrast that would display what might happen if a typical bitter were "overdone". This brew wound up being the overall winner, trumping other entries by a wide point spread. Pours a deep lightly cloudy amber with a thick resilient off-white head. Aroma is malt forward with toffee, bread and light floral notes. Nice thick mouthfeel and hides it ample alcohol content well. Finishes balanced, wavering back and forth between malt and hops.
