Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottle. This is a great ale from Britain. Pours a deep amber in color with a rapidly fading white head leaving lots of lace. It has a smooth mouth feel with a low carbonation. It has a strong citrusy hop flavor with a bit of yeast. The malts give this beer a good balance.

Not what I was expecting. For some reason I was expecting something maltier, maybe like a barley wine. What I got was a full, beautiful bitter beer. Almost like an IPA.

Pours a brownish copper with a slight, white head. The aroma has notes of caramel and floral. Flavor is slightly hoppish with a light fruit taste and a caramel malt balance.

Light brown, medium head that disappears fast. Medium bodied. Hoppy. Some malts evident. Bitter, dry finish. Not overly complex, but a solid choice.

500 mL bottle. Transparent copper in colour, with a small but sticky head; tremendous lacing. Aroma of hops and fresh malt, with a little yeast underneath. Quite smooth and creamy. Taste is light caramel malt, a bit of peach, and more malt. Finish is alcohol, then bitter hops. Full body. Nicely carbonated. Cut the alcohol back a bit, and this would be great.

I can’t believe I have not yet rated this and I can’t believe how much I liked it. There was a heck of a lot of flavor in this beer, but I think it would be a mistake to approach it by sifting through and identifying its component flavors. This one is much more of an integrated beer, with no flavor predominate. That also meant that it never got tiresome nor did it feel out of balance. Perfect level of sweetness, of hops, of fruit, etc. Great stuff.
