Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy golden amber with a short off-white head. Aroma is quite malty and has notes of citrus, caramel and some tropical fruit. Flavour is fairly similar with an additional woodiness, a hint of apricot and some of the hops coming through at the end. A very good beer with a medium to full body and a nice lingering finish, highly sessionable.

50cl bottle. This "real ale" has a beautiful, hazy amber colour, with a smallish, creamy off-white head that disappears rather quickly but leaves lacing on the glass. The aroma is rather sweet, of fig, citrus fruit and malt. The fruity character extends to the taste, nicely balanced by a resinous note of roasted malt. Long hoppy finish and aftertaste. A strong premium ale that does not wear the alcohol on its sleeve, so to speak. Beautifully balanced, eminently well-crafted, superbly drinkable beer.

Gold/amber with a white head.6.4%? They’ve done pretty well hiding that. It’s fairly standard but near the top end of that scale. Malt and hops, little caramel and a little fruit. Not much really but if there was nothing else in the pub, wouldn’t be unhappy drinking this for a night. Good session beer.

Smells like a very typical bitter, but no heavy alcohol or water notes, which is a good thing, but nonetheless quite average. Looks okay but needs way more head, whatever there was disappeared too darned quick. Has a nice smooth taste, lots of nutty notes, some caramel, but not very complex. Good mouthfeel. Not a bad beer, pretty good for a high alcohol bitter, decent for a night at a pub and a footie game.

A very nice ale, with colour and aroma to match. Retained only the slightest head after a sip or two, and features a superior taste/flavour. Washed down a LARGE choclate brownie quite handily.

500ml bottle. Deep orange in colour with a wispy side order of faom floating on top. Aromas of bubblegum and banana lollies with a lively zing in the mouth and a bitter aftertaste. Smooth and drinkable with a spicy hop finish.
