Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Dark copper coloured beer, with a high, but rough, head. The aroma has distinct hops, but not flower-like. The malts are obvious in the aroma too, but theres also a harsh metallishness. Flavor has malts and a little bit of berries, but unfotunately also metal. Well done hopped finish, but the alcohol is too obvious.

Pours a clear copper with a rich light tan head. Lovely aroma of rose, cherries, orange, and faint hops. Crisp and broad on the palate. It tastes of orange, english toffee, moderate hops, and woody cherry, a hint of sweetness, but thoroughly dry. This tastes like a true English offering should ;)

Bottled. A clear dark golden beer with a nice big white head that lasts for a long time. Very fruity and spicy aroma, with notes of hops, orange and light banana. The flavour begins sweeter and finishes with a lingering bitterness. Medium body, it does not seem 6,4%ABV. A really nice beer.

Pours golden-amber, medium head. Aroma of spicy hops and fruity English yeast. More floral hop bouqet in the flavor with some restrained bitterness. Full bodied, but drinkable. Finishes rich like an English bitter should. Very drinkable bitter. I prefer it to Fullers ESB. Upon looking at the classification, I see it’s listed as an English strong, but at 6.5, I’m not sure what makes it an English strong and not just an ESB.

500 ml bottle. Orange coloured with slight head. Aroma was predominantly of fruity malt with some hoppiness. Flavours balanced between sweetish malt and some hoppy dryness in the finish. A good British bottled beer.

Bottle. Pours a golden orange colour with a big rather short lasting white head. Fruity bit caramellic and malty aroma. Flavour is fresh and fruity, dry, malty and with a slight spiciness. Dry hoppy finish.

Characteristic amber-copper-tawny-golden IPA looking body with a small frothing head. Dry, bitter, and fruity. Extremely quaffable and delectable!
