Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottle. Slightly hazy amber colour with a medium white head. Hoppy aroma with grape fruit & notes of apricot. Floral hoppy flavour. Medium body with lively carbonation. Rather bitter, nice.

(50 cl bottle from Systembolaget) Clear copper to brown color, big fluffy lasting tan head. Lots of hops, but also sweet and fruity scent. Sweet, light roasted and hoppy, but still dominating malty taste. Big soft body, medium low co2 level. Medium bitterness, sweet aftertaste.

Nice pour out of the bottle. Dark amber color with a flaky white head. Malty, fruity and somewhat bitter it has a very smooth aftertaste. Alcohol is very well hidden so be careful. Close to being a great ale, just felt like it was missing something.

KInd of musty aroma with some hints of citrus fruits. Didn’t know what to expect with the flavor. Pours orange with a bubbly head. Looks like an IPA. Hazy. Hard to describe the flavor. The mustiness is there but somehow it finishes clean. kind of biscuity and pale ale-y. A thin and easy-drinking kind of ale.Pretty well balanced while still being flavorful. Overall I enjoyed it. A good change of pace.

500 ml bottle from Whole Foods- $2.99. Really enjoyed this beer a lot. Hazy orange in color, moderate head. Great balance of maltiness upfront without being sweet; then the hops kicked in and it ended on a good bitter note. Really nice balance of flavors- they all presented themselves in order and were all working together well. Just the right amount of carbonation. I will definately have this again- too bad the 500 mils was done so fast!

Bottle at In de Wildeman, march 07. Spicy, citric, pineapple aroma with a sweet, hoppy touch. Very flavorfull, great malty flavor, bittersweet, with a salty finnish, a touch of honey and sherry (maybe slightly oxidized) ending. Medium MF, malty finnish with a bitter and salty aftertaste. Orange color with some golden hues and a creamy white head. Nice english strong ale with a citric hop touch.

Red amber with a nice, golden head, that leaves a nice lace. The aroma is fruity, hoppy and malty and the mouthfeel is smooth. The flavour is big with a lot of notes: roasted malt, toffee, some licorice, fermented apple, other fruits, hops, sweetness, a hint of port wine and a nice bitterness in the long and slightly burnt finish. Nice.

Bottle conditioned. Spicy, fresh hop aroma. Pours clear copper, medium foamy white head. Delicious - caramel malts, zingy, spicy hops, citrus flavours, long smooth finish. Superb.
