Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Pours a semi-cloudy amber color with a robust off-white head that lingers. Aroma is bread and hop flowers. Robust hop bitterness in the taste yields quickly to sweet malt, spices, and a butteriness. Excellent stuff.

A deep dark yellow with a nice head. This was a very nice easy to drink Strong ale. Must have really sat well. Sated 06 for brewed so this is not too old. A good dep malty flavor with a some subtle spices. Small amount of hops and a very smooth finish.

Since the Young’s "Ram Brewery" has closed and many of the Young’s beers are now considered "retired", my friend Rob and I had a Young’s beer tasting on 2/08/2007 so that we could try all of the Young’s brews we could get our hands on before they’re gone... Tasting Notes: Young’s Special London Ale is honey-colored and has a dense, off-white head. Alcohol, hops, sweetness, and a slight fruitiness fills the nose. The flavor is malty and fruity and has a nice dose of floral hoppiness and warming alcohol. Quite smooth and creamy on the palate. I would expect this beer to hold up nicely since it is one of the few Young’s beers that is bottle conditioned... 16.9 oz bottle; 6.4% ABV.

Tap--Deliver with a medium to large head of a white color. The body was a slightly hazy amber color. Taste was a caramel malt with that creamy and carbonated feel. The glass was covered with a nice coat of lacing.
