Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottle from Waitrose. I have not tried this beer since it moved away from it’s namesake town and I don’t intend to either. Orange/copper colour with nettle and pepper hop aroma. Lovely body with silky malts and ample balancing english hop bitterness. Fruity and packed with flavours.

Slightly hazy, dark burnt orange brew with 1" of tan cap. Man, the colour is great! Decent retention and some slippery ropy lacing. The aroma is awesome and I wavered giving it a 10. Strong fragrant fruity / spicy hops (a mix of dark and citrus fruits). Biscuit and a bit of caramel malts. Best ever? Pretty much. The taste is biscuit and caramel with a large presence of spicy hops. The impression of alcohol is made without really noticing it. The flavour wanes during warming as the aroma was more dominant than the taste, especially early on. Cocoa and lots of pepper. Stiff bitterness prevails. A good smooth carbonation paves the way for the malty middle but that malts weakens significantly at the end of the sip. Near medium bodied. The hops hit with a good spicy burn (alc?) to finish you off. Excellent beer.

Tasted great after a long work week. Just a shame it’s not available in too many places around me.

This is UK IPA. I’m on a rating hiatus . i’m only drinking Orval ,Rochefort 8 and Pina Colada.;)...but was drinking this and became inspired . This really does resemble Meantiimes IPA in using Fuggle hops as great architecture. Juicy MALT...Peppery,spicy hops doing the conga ..with boozy oranges .Heaps better than other beerz in Young’s ’profolio’.

50cl bottle found in fakta allerød. clear orange / light amber, small thick offwhite head. sweet, flowery, quite hoppy aroma, faint pine, faint grapefruit - very american for an english beer. nice. aroma is mild, balanced and lovely. flavor is dry, pine, flowery, hoppy, refreshing. very nice. overall definetly one of the best mainstream english beers i’ve had. thirstquencing, tasty and good ABV. nice!. ends rather discrete with a little hop bitterness and some malty flavors.

Dark golden brown body with a noisy off white cap, retention is ok but no lacing what so ever. Aroma very mild and hard to detect but honey and bready malts are noticeable. Wood and mild rubbing alcohol are the first flavours I notice, secondary flavours are liquorish, caraway seeds, and maybe honey. Mouth feel is light a nicely carbonated but a burning sensation remains on my tung. Very clean and crisp and enjoyable you cant go wrong with this beer.
