Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Nice looking amber color with a medium lasting (but soapy looking) head. Sweet aroma with honey and vanilla. Malty sweet taste with light honey and vanilla or perhaps some oakish hints underneath. Some very light citrus peal in the finish. Medium body, a bit creamy. Not bad

Bottle. Brilliant orange-amber color with a thin creamy head that fades to a persistent ring. Aromas of fruity hops, a little perfumey, with a slight yeasty breadlike aroma in the background. Very promising. Initial hop bite gives way to some sweet fruity maltiness, all the while being balanced out by the delicious fruity and citrusy hops. Alcohol presence not obtrusive, actually adding to the flavor profile. A little earthy quality in the flavor as it warms. More carbonation than most English ales I’ve had. Good easy drinking ale that will sneak up on you if you are not careful.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with a frothy head and a nice lace. Nice malt taste with a hint of toffee. Somewhat sweet finish. The alcohol is hidden very nicely.

special london electrifies the glass with the brilliant orange of raw yams, of cedar heartwood, of peach pit. but unlike those things it begins clear-- and with enough soft foam to shave a walrus. the beer has a rich flavor and gentle strength-- one that will help soothe you and calm you after that walrus has gored out your lung. for those of us who admired the head without any inclination to lather any sort of marine mammal, we were treated to a confectionary confluence of apricot aromas bobbing and weaving among shortbread, banana and corriander. the cobbler-like smell seems to call for a spoon rather than a snifter, but once on the tongue, the fruits that promised such sweetness shift coyly to a slightly drier profile, the fruits now residing not in compote or jams but in leafy and fat citrusy hops. medium body with a tailor made carbonation, the bitterness thrashes with the malts until we’re certain that one of the constituents will either become maimed or pregnant. several pours into the affair some cloudiness joins the presentation, but by now the drinker is likely tossing the beverage back in such quenching gulps that the clay-like modest yeastiness only softens the palate even more.

Very good bitter, with lots of fruity flavour. Apricots. Nice malty aftertaste, with a lingering and appealing bitterness.

Not one of my favorite ale’s. A lIttle too bitter for my taste’s, but it grew on me the more I had.
