Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Not one of my favorite ale’s. A lIttle too bitter for my taste’s, but it grew on me the more I had.

Not impressed with the aroma. Kind of dusty and stale smelling. Looks great with copper color body and nice head. Flavor is very nice indeed! Big fruitiness up front followed by malts and a hop finish. The more it taste it the more I like it.

Light amber, frothy stiff head, with slow disappaition. Slight sweet hop aroma. Sweet and creamy on the tongue. Light bitters, but namely a smooth malt. A light bit of yeast can be ascertained, chewy with a slight woody aftertaste. Slight bland light fruit (apple) taste. (Botte Pour 6/19/2006) UPDATE: The green bottle version, has a bit stronger malt character, almost sour, but not quite. Still, a very passable and pleasant ale, I just wished I could get it on tap. Cloudy copper coloured ale, large white head, good lacing, Hops in the nose, some flowers and malt. Tastes hoppy, syrup, lots of strong alcohol. Some malt. Grain finish, bitter, no alcohol in the finish

Nice deep-orange copper pour. Bubbly head with good lace. Wonderful complexity going on here. Notes of wood, spice, butter and Goldings to the nose...maybe some dark fruit. This complexity transfers directly into the flavor. Crisp, hoppy fruit over sublime caramel. Decent bitter finish that feels both satiating and crisp. The strength of the brew is woven nicely. Nice job!

On tap at Tank’s Tap Room. Great beer, tastes like a very well-balanced pale ale with a very noticeable hop bite. Nice floral hopiness with minimal bitterness. You can tell this has been dry-hopped.

Just better than average across the board. Poured an amber to light brown color with a nice head. The best part of the appearance was the long lasting trail of lace on the glass. The aroma was malty and somewhat buttery. The flavor was balanced between malts and hops, but I couldn’t get past the butter that was just underneath the toffee, caramel malt base. Very light touch of fruits was noticeable, perhaps from the hops.
