Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Pours a deep golden amber color. Aromas of caramel, fruit, and a touch of yeast. Flavors of light fruit, malts, and a nice touch of hops.

Pours a not good, golden color. A little darker than the golden you find in your toilet. Smells bitter and alcoholic. Slight caramel aroma. Taste is not quite as off setting. Bitter and alcoholic aftertaste though. Not my favorite beer.

Nice appearance and bottle. Thin slightly-creamy head. This beer has a bitter bight to it, but not too much for the level of alcohol that is present. London Ale is very hoppy and tasty, but doesn;t have much of the fruity flavor that is mentioned on the bottle. Gets increasingly tastier after a dew sips.

Draught at Tyler’s in Durham, NC. Clear amber color with off white head. Aroma is a strong mix of well balanced malty caramel and fruity hops. Kind of like a caramel apple. Honey sweet, slick and sticky with caramel, toffee, and tobacco flavors. Touch of pear at the end. Wild scene.

Bottle. Clear copper colour with a small off-white head. Malty fruity aroma. Malty hoppy flavor. Leaving you with some bitterness in the aftertaste.

Aroma: Lovely hops with that malty note just there to beg the next whiff... Appearance: Amber with a huge white head which lasts and lasts Flavor: Just intriguing, starts with a malty sweetness to replaced with English Hop flavors Palate: Very light on the tongue, almost dances along to a delightfuly sharp bite in the finish yummm Overall: For me with this beer characterises the charm of old world style beers... time just makes the magic deeper and better... get a few.. taste them as the bottle ages...
