Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

bottle. Amber pour with a decent head. Aromas were sweet and malty. But the flavor fell off a bit. The bitterness was nice, but just all around pretty boring.

Draught at O’Briens: Light hazy amber color. Nose of cigarette smoke, anejo tequila and a dollup of oak and aged malts. The flavor is underhopped with some diacetyl. The finish is malty. Eh.

Not really my type, but was not bad, it was dark, and resembles the Young’s house’s signature in the taste.

Bottle. Hazy gold colored ale with a orange tint. Nice big off white head that diminishes quickly. Big sweet aroma. Bitter taste with a pleasantly crisp and dry finish.

BBE 13 Apr 06. Nice copper color with a thick, tight-bubbled head that has a yellowish tinge. Slightly quinine aroma upfront (I have consumed this beer several times and never have smelled this before) but the beautifully hoppy and distinctly fruity character of Youngs comes thruogh. There is definite meat on this beer with strong orange notes I do not remember and it lacks the leafy hoppiness of fresh Goldings that used to define this ale. Also, there is much more sweetness than I remember. Is this what they "evolved" this beer into to make it more approachable to the American market or is this just a bad batch.

Pours a nice clear amber golden color with slightly off white head that shrank. Nose is hoppy and filled with sweet robust fruit flavors. Easy drinking with full body and good bitterness. The fuggles are easily discerned in this brew. Its easiness to drink makes this a new favorite, not only in its style but at its price and availability as well.
