Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottle (500ml). Poured clear light copper with a large foamy lasting off-white head - gets hazy as it warms up. Interesting aroma of fruit candy (almost like Christmas cake), sweet rum, pungent hops, nutty sweet roast malt - the yeast and hops get a little overpowering as it warms up. Taste is much like a solid fruity bitter with extra UK hops, quite a backing of juicy malt, the hops help balance out the sweetness, has an almost bourbon-like character on the dry, sweetish finish. Surprisingly thick-bodied, somewhat dry, and very smooth and creamy - went down like a draught beer - and I hope to have it on cask next time I’m in London.

Pours a nice light amber, with a fluffy off-white head and great retention. Aroma is quite strong with rum, fruit and delicious english hops (fuggles?). It feels quite creamy in the mouth, with fine english caramel malts coming through. The finish has a small alcohol burn, and feels a little sticky and fruity. Very nice.

Hated this at first, glad i gave it a second chance. Nice amber color. Says it’s a Strong Ale, I say more of aPale with some balls. Classic English malt, what you would expect. The Hops get a little gamey as they impart an off-putting(at first) earthy hop element. Very reminisent of ORVAL with the dry hopping.

Fantastic stuff. Orange amber colour slightly cloudy, good hoppy aroma, a well balanced beautiful taste. For those sad folk who have not enjoyed the pleasure of this ale get your laughing gear around it as soon as you can, lovely stuff. Would easily make my top ten ale list.

16.9oz bottle: best before April 13 2006. Pours a clear penny copper with a mod-sized off-white head. Smells of fruit (some citrus hops) and some sweet caramel malts. Taste is moderately sweet and bitter--nicely balanced with a bit of raisin and slight bitter finish that doesn’t last long. Pretty good beer. I know I’m breaking some kind of code since my palate isn’t @ 100%, but too bad for now.

Pours a nice coppery amber with a fair head. Aroma is fruity, malty and crisp like dry ice. A wonderful roasted malt character rolls into a fruit infused body that is tamed by the generous English hops. Leaves an inviting hint of a toffee/candy flavor on the tongue and throat that begs for another sip. I enjoy this brew each time. Should be part of any "high ale" afternoon brew session.

Fairly clear amber with a great foam. Fruity aroma. Apples and pears. Slight caramel malt. Mellow. Almost a little sweet. An ok session beer, but it’s not going to knock your socks off.

Very nice after an ice cream sandwich. Dry and complex, malty - finishes with a typical grainy, astringant, slightly hoppy english wonderfulness. Seems I like SOME english styles quite a bit. Almost trappisty. Recommended.
