Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Very nice after an ice cream sandwich. Dry and complex, malty - finishes with a typical grainy, astringant, slightly hoppy english wonderfulness. Seems I like SOME english styles quite a bit. Almost trappisty. Recommended.

Large creamy white head on pale golden-yellow body. Malty aroma with fruit notes - cherry. Fruity flavor with lots of cherry on a malty base. Medium body.

Hazy orange color with a thick creamy off-white head that lasts quite a while. Relatively hoppy aroma with a caramel malty flavor.

Cellared. Bottle says best before Oct 04. Pours a nice golden with 1/4 inch head that has nice staying power -- never totally leaving. Smells malty. Taste is quite nicely balanced with neither malt nor hops taking ownership. A very nice surprise.

Bottle: Pours a hazy dark copper with a thin white head that retained a ring to the bottom. Aroma is hoppy and fruity cherry, mellowing to a caramel sweetness then deeper fruity plum tones. Flavour is unripe apricot and cherry fruit with a light buttery malt taste.

12 oz. brown bottle. Poured out a light copper color, with a minimal white head. Aromas are of fruity esters, alcohol, caramel malts, and a strong aroma of yeast. Earthy Fuggles hops make a brief appearance, only to disappear quickly. Medium mouthfeel, leaning towards the rich side. Bitter finish to it, along with a decent alcohol warming effect.

The aroma is toasted malt, caramel, and spruce. The appearance is amber orange with a nice foamy head. The flavor is lightly sweet, fruity, malty, and bitter. Average palate. The aftertaste is candy like. Nice.
