Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Medium creamy white head over light brown clear body. Aroma of citrusy pine hops so harmoniously blended with sweet caramel malts that the two can hardly be told apart. Deep, sweet, malty taste of nuts, combined with bitterness, citrus, and pine needles. Soft, bitter aftertaste. Glorious! World class! It’s really the EKG hops that make this one.

Bottle at ’December at DougShoemaker’s 2005’ -- courtesy of DougShoemaker. Vintage 2000. Pours a hazy dark orange with a spare diminishing creamy white head. Aroma is fruity with some malt and a touch of hops. The flavour is predominently sweet malt and it tastes O.K. but there’s a slightly unpleasant aftertaste -- perhaps staleness due to the age of the bottle? Decent but ultimately dissapointing.

Bottle, Doug’s, Christmas ’05. Dark orange, small white head. Musty hops, slight malt in aroma. Strong pepper like hops in taste, as well as a little smoke. Quite flavourful malt sweetness. Pretty decent, seemed a little old though.

Nice amber color, medium sized off white head that had a good hang time then faded to leave little behind. The aroma was malty and sweet with some citrus and hops coming through .The flavor was okay with a decent malty side some citrus and hops and a mild sweetness as well. These guys are always hit and miss with me,this one is decent but could be better.

1. Bottle 09/08/2004 Golden coloured with some sour fruit and hop aromas. Slightly bitter lasting dry malt finish. 2. Cask Handpump in the outside marquee at the Prince Of Wales, Foxfield 26/11/2005 Amber coloured beer with plenty of fruit aroma. There’s also a spicy taste which I found to be more prominent than when I last tried this beer in the bottle format. Some dryness, bitterness and malt in the finish.

Young’s is an odd brewery. I can never figure out whether to be disappointed or impressed b/c while their beers aren’t bad, they’re kind of unmemorable. So I take a break and then drink another Young’s beer and wonder, have I rated this before? They provoke an odd sense of rating deja-vu. As beers go, this was pleasant but forgettable. A round, soft, toffee flavor overlays all, with an herbal beginning to the hops, a lift by carbonation in the middle, and a floral finish.

Great perfume on the nose of this beer -- pine, grapefruit, bubblegum and toffee malts. In appearance, the beer is a rich amber and brilliant in the glass. Taste is a hops adventure, from bite to fruit to a piney finish. Palate is consistent with a champagne-like expression of bubbles as the beer leaves the tongue.
