Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Pale orange-brown, slightly hazy, small head. Fruity hoppy aroma with caramel-malty notes as well. Flavourful palate of sweet roasted malt and bitter hops. Alcohol is hidden. Very nice.

Pretty honey-colored ale, with a moderate light beige head---retention moderate, with light honeycomb lace. The aroma is moderately sweet and yeasty---quite pleasant really...The sweet malt really comes through at first sip, with hops supplying some dryness but not a great deal of discernible flavor. Fruity notes of plum and apples come through pleasantly. Carbonation is also quite light. The body is quite good, moderately full, and the finish moderately dry. This is lacking that Nth degree of complexity, but is most drinkable---an nice warmer on a grey drizzly day---like this one!

A huge dissapointment. Malty with notable alcohol warming. A lot of alcohol flavor for only a 6% beer. A little bit of hops in the back and on the aftertaste, but not much. No bad or unpleasant flavors, just nothing to get excited about. Boring, bland and lacking any semblance of complexity.

somewhat malty with a light bitter aftertaste, decent head, nothing too special, but I would probably have it again sometime

Bottle from a wine market. Poured with a nice creamy white head, lasting almost frothy. Coppery red and crystal clear, the aroma was appley and classic of English styles. Flavor of mild apples and fruit with a hoppy finish, very slight medicinal or tinny aftertaste.

Poured dark amber with a slight murkiness coming in right at the end. Thickish head, but not a lasting one. Aroma of pepper, oranges, crystal malt and slightly woody. Malty sweetness and hops bitterness are well balanced, and a well judged carbonation level lets these flavours provide the bulk of tasting sensations. It seems the English are actually good at something after all...

Pours a nice clear copper with a thick off-white head. Musty, floral aroma with a touch of apple. Flavor has notes of toasted malt, caramel, toffee, orange, light raisin, a little apple and ends with a solid dose of English hops. Pleasantly sweet and malty with enough bitterness to balance it out; not overly hoppy. Medium, well-rounded creamy body with subtle carbonation. Lacing hangs on the glass in sheets, very good head retention. Overall, a good beer.

A fruity aroma after pouring this orangish-golden brew into a glass. Bitter, with a sweetness after drinking it for a while. This stuff is good. Makes me quote Homer Simpson is saying " Mmmmmm Beer!"
