Thickish head, but not a lasting one. Aroma of pepper, oranges, crystal malt and slightly woody. Malty sweetness and hops bitterness are well balanced, and a well judged carbonation level lets these flavours provide the bulk of tasting sensations. It seems the English are actually good at something after all... jasonp (1513), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Oct 16, 2005 Pours a nice clear copper with a thick off-white head. Musty, floral aroma with a touch of apple. Flavor has notes of toasted malt, caramel, toffee, orange, light raisin, a little apple and ends with a solid dose of English hops. Pleasantly sweet and malty with enough bitterness to balance it out; not overly hoppy. Medium, well-rounded creamy body with subtle carbonation. Lacing hangs on the glass in sheets, very good head retention. Overall, a good beer. demitriustown (702), Shelby Township, Michigan, USA

Bitter, with a sweetness after drinking it for a while. This stuff is good. Makes me quote Homer Simpson is saying " Mmmmmm Beer!" larsam (127), Southampton, Bedfordshire, England

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 29, 2005 Bottle conditioned, aged 3.3 yrs, 500 ml. The beer matures to a dark amber with lasting white head, a pleasant pop when opening the bottle. Smooth, strong beer with heavy yeast nose. Clear and warming with vanilla undertones and a port, sherry body. the hops have lost their edge, blending in to the body. But all is not perfect! What is this fishy, cod liver oil note i get left with? never expected that. Overall a very good beer though. hughie (3079), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Sep 25, 2005 Good looking amber ale with a small white head. Clear, some sediment in the bottle. Malty aroma, with just a touch of hops. Full malty taste, quite sweet, with a strong bitter finish. Good, but not as good as London Pride in the ’London’ beer category KnutAlbert (3217), Oslo, Norway

They have taken the magic from the Young’s cask ales and trapped it in a bottle, and by brewing it stronger they hav even more nuances in the flavour. The best bottled English ale you can find!
