Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

This truly is a "special" london ale, it tastes great with a solid delicous, almost bitter aftertaste, it is fine ale that kinda warms you up! ANOTHER beutiful brew by the fine people at Young’s!

A Mes rate: Great orange tan colour. Shame about the head. Aroma is faint but good. Fruity and wooden. Flavour is wooden too, slightly sweet and bitter with a brief bitterness to the finish which ends up a little sticky a spoils it but only a bit. Overall not a bad drink but just a little too floral for me.

Mine poured with very little head and a malt aroma. Color is orange/red. Malt flavor with a noticable alcohol that isn’t at all unpleasant. Semi-bitter citrus aftertaste. This ale has a distinctively stronger taste than most that is quite enjoyable. The English really have a handle on the use of hops that support the beer without overwhelming the malt.

Full and pleasing hoppy aroma....fruit and some pine. The English hops are great. Very above-average beer.

500 ml bottle, now available in Norway (Vinmonopolet). Deep amber coloured, slightly hazy, large and lingering head. Pleasant aroma of fruity hops on a moderately malty background, hints of toffee and leather. Flavour is fairly malty with some caramel and a dominant hoppy bitterness, too bitter in the finish. A bit overdone on the hops in my book, but obviously a well-above-average beer.

Dark orange color with a thin white head. Strong malt aroma with just a hint of hops. Refreshing English hops are much more prevalent in the flavor and really do balance out the malt. Amost tastes like a strong English IPA. Very enjoyable.
