Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Poured a hazy orange color....I swear I even see the sediment in the head. Small head that does hang around for a while. Has a doughy aroma to it that is real nice. Has a sweet, fruity taste to it and a hoppy finish. I would recommend this to others.....I have not been disappointed by a Young’s product yet.

This brewer is kind of hit or miss with me. This was one of the misses. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a medium golden color with a medium sized white head. The aroma was odd - almost smelled sweaty. The flavor was some sweet malt with light hops and a fairly rough finish.

Poured a deep orange color with a small amount of foamy offwhite head. Aroma was floral and hoppy, flavor malty with a slightly bitter finish. Warming alcohol prescence. Overall, pretty good.

Perhaps the first beer from Young’s I’ve really enjoyed. Coppery orange, small but lasting smooth head. Aroma was a bit sulphury, with a bit of a floral note. Flavors were mostly toffee oriented malts, with some undefined fruitiness, touch more sulfur, and a balancing bitter finish. This is Brit hoppy - readily apparent, but not beating you about the face. Enjoyable change of pace.

This beer looked and smelled much better than it tasted. The flavor is very confusing with a nice hop presence up front which quickly gets overpowered by a lactic, musty maltiness that is not very pleasant. I was hoping for more from this beer becuase of the great things I had read about it.

Draught. Coppercoloured. Earthy very hoppy aroma with some maltiness showing through. Powerful hop flavour and good bitterness. Some caramel in the aftertaste.

Aroma: Fresh hops, creamy sweet malt, a little fruit, vanilla and butterscotch - soft and inviting. Taste: nice bitter/ full round caramalt, sweet too, best English drop I’ve tried I think - very drinkable with noticeable hop smack and a tingly zing across the palate. Long lingering bitter aftertaste - like an IPA! Will try again (next time not at 3 in the morning!). Extra points for new labeling.

An amber orange ale with a small cap and generous natural carbonation from bottle conditioning. Wonderful aroma of sweet bready malts and fruits. Generous chewy maris otter malting with dry fruity notes, sprkling , fresh tasting with a cidery finish. A very nice ale...malty yet dry and refreshing.
