Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Pours a nice copper colour with a thin head. Aromas or floral, citric hops, malt. The taste has more hops than I was expecting, grapefruity, and floral with a good amount of malt sweetness. As the beer warms other flavours come out like orange, caramel, bittering hops and a more pronounced sweetness that is kept in check by the hops. All in all a tasty beer I would try again.

This poars a pleasant and thick ruby with a nice offwhite and somewhat lasting head. The nose is pleasant and caramel malty. The taste is initially sweet and bready, but it rounds out with a nice bitterness. There’s a bit of a cherry pie or apple flavor in there, and perhaps some brown sugar and spiciness. Overall, this is a relatively complex and grand ale. Perhaps it is a bit overbearing on the sweetness.

500 ml bottle. Best before date: 09/05. Pours a light orange with thick fluffy off-white head that leaves plenty of lace. Aroma is strongly of hops and grapefruit a little bit of tangy yeast. Taste begins subtly of malts and finishes nice and hoppy and bitter with a citrus fruit sour tangy flavor. Alcohol is nicely hidden. One of my favorites from Young’s so far.

Over the past number of years, I’ve bought at least 3 bottles of this (the larger size -16.9oz?) - Every single one of them was a gushing monster that left less than 1/2 the bottle to drink. So, I never bothered rating it - it tasted "off". Recently, I found 4 packs of this and other Young’s brews, so I thought I’d give it another try. Copper penny with a thin white head that settles down to a thin ring around the edges. Malty, fruity, lightly herbal hoppy aroma. Taste is pleasantly mellow, caramel, fruit sweetness, bready, nutty implications of a brown ale. Finishes with a mellow, nicely rounded hop bitterness and then a slight chalk texture. The warmer the better on this one.

From the bottle, it pours a beautiful clear light copper color with a medium bubbly head. The head lasts quite nicely with fine lacing on the rim of the glass. There is a pleasant sweet malt aroma met with hints of fruit (bananna?), nuts and toffee. Bursting with flavor. Initially bitter-sweet toffee and nuts. The malt sweetness balances nicely by the hop bitterness. Toward the middle, the sweetness fades leaving a slightly (nicely) bitter, dry aftertaste with a notable alcohol warmth.

On-tap The colour is cloudy copper red; the thin lid of foam is pale beige.

The smell is sweet with notes of yeast, nuts and fruits (apricots? Peaches?).

The carbonation is fresh with lots of large bubbles.

The taste is fruity, sweet with some bitter almonds, diacetyl and yeast. The aftertaste is medium bitter, short and rather anonymous.

An average bitter, nothing special at all.

Bottle conditioned from Sainsbury’s. Orangey hop aroma with a bit of malt (toffeish). Slightly syrupy mouthfeel, bit of sweetness in the taste. Good bitterfinish.

500ml bottle BB Jul/05 Brillantly clear, no head. Stoney aroma. Wet stones or damp wood chips thread runs into the flavor along with biscuits and malt. Stones and pepper add spice to the somewhat thin beer with a metallic underpin to the finish. Fairly bitter finish. I really started this one too cold. A brighter fruity character emerges to replace the metallic quality as the glass is emptied. Pretty nice.
