Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Rich golden, almost amber color with a creamy tan head that slowly settles into a landscape of hills and valleys. Body is lightly carbonated and speckled with small bubbles that rise slowly. As the head settles, patterns of intricate lace are revealed around the rim of the glass. Aroma is fresh but sour; malt and yeast dominate the aroma while suble undertones of, alcohol, cherry, sweet fruit, almonds, and a variety of hops appear throughout the nose. Flavor is a bit off. Mostly malt with a bit of hops and a bit of alcohol in the finish. While this beer’s aroma is somewhat complex its palate is not. Overall, this is the kind of beer that I like to try out and then leave for a while. A store shelf oddity, to be revisited some day when I feel in the mood for something different.

I really did not think too much of this beer. Maybe I need to try it again, because people seem to like it. The taste was just wierd in my opinion. I really was not into it. The pour and the aroma were much better then the taste.

Bottled. Have had this many times, and I am surprised I have not rated it yet. A mid brown colour with a small head. Hoppy, but not very hoppy, orangey aroma. Fairly sweet maltiness, bitter finish.

Cask at The Bishops Arms, Malmö.
Amber colored with a fine tan head. Bitter hops dominates the aroma with notes of spices and toffee. Full and well balanced. Flavor is also bitter hoppy with a sweet malty middle. Notes of nut and toffee and a long lasting dry and bitter peppery finish. Very flavorfull and tasty. What a pleasant surprise!

I found the malt was the stronger presence. IIf sweet is not your thing this is not the brew for you. I would like to try this one cask conditioned.

Nice dark amber coloring with a little bit of cloudiness. A thin white head on top. Aroma is very malty with cherries. Also has vanilla and some bready hops. The taste is slightly alcoholic. It has a hoppy palate with some pine and a little bit of bread crust. A pleasant and subtle beer. Would make a nice session ale.

Very odd aroma. Rich perfume or flowers swirled right out of the bottle. Taste was a bold malt presence. Very complex mixing of sweet flavors going on. not sure if it really works.

Got this one from LIC. Gladsaxe DK. Bottle. Copper color and a sweet malty aroma and light bitter dry taste in a medium body. Dry finish.
