Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Golden amber with a white head and lacing. Strange musty flavour with citrus hop flavours. Decent palate. Not how I remember it from a year or two ago :(

Bottle. Bit hazy golden amber body with a long lasting white head. Fruity and yeasty aroma. Fruity aroma with a good hoppiness and some spices from the yeast. Hoppy and malty aftertaste. Great brew.

Malty slightly sour nose. Pale beige head. Slightly hazy pale golden brown colour. Soft fruity and slightly metallic taste. At the end hopiiness. Grasssy hop taste. Slightly sweet tatse.

Hazy orange beer with a minimal white head. Thin white lacing is quite long lasting. Aroma is hoppy, fresh piney and slightly toffy. Distinctive Goldings hop character is slightly floral, citric, spicy and piney. Flavor is medium bitter and toffy malts are included. Palate is medium bodied, tongue-numbing and bitter. Clean and and easy ale.

Bottle. Conditioned. Pours a hazy gold colour with a orange tint. Nice big off white head that diminishes quickly. Big sweet aroma. Bitter taste with a pleasantly crisp and dry finish.

Pours with a snowy white, nicely lingering head, strong aroma of malts fighting through the fluff...this beer to look at is slightly lighter than I would normally go for but was swayed by the bottle conditioned tag on the bottle and was rewarded by the toffee and caramel in the mouth, it has real complexity with lots of different things but not one overpowering

Bottle, bought @ Irma, Industriens Hus, Cph.
Pours hazy golden amber with a fine, staying, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is sweet, lots of malts, some toffee and good flowery hops. Medium carbonation, fine, lightly dry mouthfeel. Flavour is wonderful. Lots of toffee, a bit of burnt caramel, good, dryish flowery bitterness. A touch of metal perhaps, but the beer is maybe just served a tad too cold. Long, lingering aftertaste with a heacy hops presence. This is really enjoyable.

Solid ale, with a well dden alcholic presence. Pours from the bottle with a beautiful wispy two finger head. Lovely muddy orange colur. Balanced with a minimal hoppy finish. enjoyable on a cool autumn evening
