Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottle, bought @ Irma, Industriens Hus, Cph.
Pours hazy golden amber with a fine, staying, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is sweet, lots of malts, some toffee and good flowery hops. Medium carbonation, fine, lightly dry mouthfeel. Flavour is wonderful. Lots of toffee, a bit of burnt caramel, good, dryish flowery bitterness. A touch of metal perhaps, but the beer is maybe just served a tad too cold. Long, lingering aftertaste with a heacy hops presence. This is really enjoyable.

Solid ale, with a well dden alcholic presence. Pours from the bottle with a beautiful wispy two finger head. Lovely muddy orange colur. Balanced with a minimal hoppy finish. enjoyable on a cool autumn evening

Pulled this review out from a while ago... Served at cellar temperature in glass. Woe is me and getting beers with dates. Toffee malt notes dominate the nose, has a sort sharpness to it too which always seems to indicate it’s a bit old. Clear amber body with a washy white head and lacing. Flavour is slightly sweet, toffeeish malt, hints of hop floralness, not much though. Slight bitter dry ending. Not bad but not outstanding.

Knew this was good as the floral and citrus came off the nose. Murky colour with not much of a head. Citrus and spice with modest grip. Nice beer.
